2022 mame experiments

Posting here as a way to document my collection of my mame experiments I am starting this year.

Would love comments and suggestions as I am still relatively new to the hobby.

the collection as it currently stands (still inside the garage as it's not quite full spring evidenced my the snow we had this morning)

Siberian Crabapple group in a Jim Barret long rectangle.

When bought this pot i knew it was going to be a favorite. Originally I planned to try a mame raft but then the saplings I ordered this year had this trio that I thought suited it quite nicely. We will see how it develops but regardless I love it.

Midwest Crabapple in what I believe is another Jim Barret lotus (will be confirming as it's so small there is no Mark on thr bottom)

i think you should replant that group planting. It looks too symmetrical. I'd plant them in a tighter group either to the left or right side. Possibly position the two curvy trees next to each other with the curves going in the same direction.
Also, keep in mind I've only been doing this a year, I think if you use a deeper pot to set the smaller pots into then you can get escape roots which should help with growth and ramification. All the trees I double-potted filled the safety pot with roots. It's hard to resist the temptation to pick the little critters up though.

I hadn't thought of an asymmetric planning in the pot like that... It's a good idea.
The trees themselves have already started to bud out since planting so I will need to check and see if there would be time to modify the planting this year. My gut says keep this in mind and modify next year but we will see, thanks a ton for the idea!

I agree with the change of spacing. Seems to be a definite thing for humans to space plants equally when planting but that's definitely not natural and looks artificial. No problem changing next spring. By then the trees should have some branching so maybe even better placement will be possible depending where buds grow this season. Rearrangement of group planting is easy for the first few years but possible for many years after initial planting.

Ray Nesci is a bonsai retailer in Sydney, Australia. I have not heard that he makes bonsai pots but may possibly have sold that one at one stage? No idea how it would have ended up in NY?

They use kanji as a sort of road map to determine where to plant the trees in a composition.
I just seperated a group that I planted last spring in a smaller pot than that, wasn't too difficult to get them apart.
The composition wasn't worthy of the pot they were in
