Jason, it's funny but they seem to come and go sometimes in stages...
If you are wanting to keep them, be sure and not let them dry out
untill they get established in the soil.

Burt Davy are really nice for shohin, for they have such compacted leaves.

you guys all seem to have the mame variety + i've never seen any aerials on any of your trees...the leaves on mine will not reduce nearly as well as yours so the shohin for me will not happen...without being biased i reckon this is 1 of the best bonsai ficus species worldwide......

Do you keep yours in full sun ???
The leaves usually will reduce with the help of alot of sun and defoliating.
The only prob. with full sun is they sometimes don't want to throw ariels...

Regardless, I think you are off to a really good start.
The ones that go up and form a "Y"...
I usually will pick one of the branches and wire it down into my first branch.
Sometimes a little angle change might be required in the replanting.

And yes, Burt Davi are nice to work with. :)

BIG time bump on a 7yo thread, lol.

Any tips on developing thicker trunks from small cuttings? I’m thinking multiple sacrifice branches and also trying to get aerial roots to fuse back to the trunks.

I wonder if your native is the ‘normal’ or ‘longfolia’ described here: http://tom-piergrossi.squarespace.com/ficus-figs/ficus-burtt-davyi-nana

Varieties of the burtt-davyi are the 'nana' which has the smallest leaf of the variety, the 'normal' with moderate leaf size and the 'longfolia' which has the largest leaf of the variety.

A big problem I have found with my ficus is that they don't always grow branches where you need them...
I approach grafted this cutting to the trunk and nature seems to be doing a good job healing the wound...
