Black Hills Spruce - Yellow Mountains

I'd say that this was half way between a Fukinagashi and Literati. If it is to represent the Yellow Mountain trees, they are flat topped. If you took off the apex and let it be flat it would look more natural in not Japanese style - but the Yellow Mountains are in China. On the other hand if it is to be more Japanese then I would accentuate the windswept feel much more. This is a nice composition but it feels kind of half way between the two potentials. Either way I think this would be great - well done nice work.

I know this picture is from long ago but I must say, that composition is great. Very reminiscent an old Douglas-fir hanging on to a coastal cliff. Like what you could see in the San Juan islands in Washington state.

Years of harsh coastal winds and salt spray can create trees that “crawl” among the rocks. Their is a strong incentive for them to retain and/or develop low limbs since they typically are less exposed to the elements.
Whenever a coastal wind blows out a trees top or breaks long limbs, energy gets redirected to inner and lower branches that remain unscathed. It is the real world equivalent of us pinching/pruning our trees to promote lower and inner growth.
