Very nice - how tolerant are they of root reduction? I need to throw 2 in the ground for a few years...

HAWAIIAN UMBRELLA - ROOT OVER ROCK: FOR TRAV

Here's another ROR I made from an airlayer. The accent plants are wild strawberry and collected ferns. The ferns "run", not a problem in this planting, but I don't recommend them cause I just replanted a Bald Cypress and the fern bulbs had spread and were competing with the tree; absolute pain...

HAWAIIAN UMBRELLA - ROOT OVER ROCK: FOR TRAV

January 27, 2022: remove a few roots. Not a big fan of the lower horizontal roots seen in the bottom left of the last picture - these need to be thinned during the next repot.

HAWAIIAN UMBRELLA - ROOT OVER ROCK: FOR TRAV

The branching had gotten leggy so I cut it back hard in early Nov. 2021 (11.12.2021) It started budding out about month later. (12.3.2021)

HAWAIIAN UMBRELLA - ROOT OVER ROCK: FOR TRAV

I started this tree from an air-layer that I separated from the mother in 2015. I planted it on the rock in 2016. In December 2018 I gave it to my brother in law for his birthday. In spring 2021 I stole it back to re-shape it. The pictures below are Dec. 9 2018

Thanks for the feedback - Is it true this is a species that grows in your area?

Completed the fine wiring thru most branch tips; left side still has awkward, leggy branching. I have not decandled this tree in a few years due to health - this year the budset looks good and I'm looking forward to decandling and some back-budding, with any luck.

Aerial roots on ficus using straws

I've done this on F. Retusa and Hawaiian Umbrella - of all the attempts, black straws worked best, the roots seemed to turn brown and die most attempts. Also, I cut the straws lengthwise from end to end - way easier to remove and can let the root tip get established in the soil. Any updates?

The JBP grafts were successful. I cut them off b/c I like original foliage - soft, light green mature needles look great with the rough, light grey bark. I had grafted for 2 reasons - the material was pretty bad: lots of awkward branching and foliage far from trunk, and to practice grafting...
