I remember planting cuts (5 mm, 1/4 inch) of Zelkova serrata in a pot, in february one year. I left them unattended in a shaded corner, and they rooted.
I have a Zelkova sinense,1m80, 6 feet in a pot, will try it again.

Yes, colours can vary both in spring and autumn dependeing on factors like soil composition (usually, the more acidic, the best the colours), humidity, temperature, etc. in a word summer stress.

"32F" in the civilized world -😄- is 0°C, when water starts to freeze.
Definitely no root activity at that temperature. Roots don't grow in a frozen soil, for some species they are even damaged if that stays for several days.
