some kind of jap. maple I dug out of the trash

Here's some bark detail: most of what is grey on the branches was BLACK two years ago when I put it in full sun for the summer :o there seems to be a lot of scarring, like someone cut it up with a utility knife...that's new since last year. Come to think of it though we did have a retarded cat...

im more worried that the swelling buds will freeze and die. annd the price of tree crops will jump. Anyway its been dry today. I'm gonna start root pruning when my wife gets home from work. hopefully she remembers the soil! I took some photos to kill some time since I just snapped my garden...

A few pine seeds, 6 years later.

Have you ever had your water tested? You may not even need RO. Take the ppm reading for each nute from the test and incorporate it into your overall formula. There's several free programs out there like hydo-buddy or salt smarts. :2cents:

    Elm and eggs

Its definately not a fungus. I vote eggs. I would scrape/wash off as many as I could and treat the plant with potassium silicate. Silica is a systemic that is also a micronute. It helps shore up cell walls and enhances immune function. Keep in mind though that silica transport depends on...

The photos of the leaves on that link look very similar to what I have...I want to say my leaves are a tad broader. I should know soon...buds are swelling. EDIT: I just checked the weather. were about to have a week in the 30/20s...guess ill have to drag my trees inside. I hate false springs :(

The sun burn was a hard lesson! I thought it had a wilt of some kind before I noticed the bark burn. The tree lives a very sheltered life now on the (covered) front porch getting only about 2 hrs direct mid morning sun, the rest is all indirect but not quite shade if that makes sense. Shes...

    Grow Lights Output

I am aware and in no way disagree with you. My point was that no matter what kind of light you use, you will need at least 50W per sqft. to get enough lumens to sustain growth. And was meant as a rule of thumb for cfl growers. Obviously more light is a good thing! Perhaps I should have said...

I have one of those HOT5 panels as well. They work great for small plants! lets do some math. 55w*8/(2*4) = 55watts per square foot.

I'm not worried about canopy width I want more trunk girth. It seems to be more or less done developing height and main branch structure. I was planning on root pruning it next weekend if the weather holds. I brought up they layering because I thought this size of tree might be too large to do...

    Allow Me to Introduce Myself

Sounds like a summertime plan! Maybe I can sneak away when the wife takes the kids to the zoo.

Just as soon as it leafs out again! Those photos are from seperate years...hard to tell I know. Anyway my beast description is leaves are heavily lobed like a cannibis leaf but with more pronounced but fewer teeth. They turn yellow in the fall. I foundout the hard way that it can't handle more...

So I found this tree in that pot in a trash-pile on the side of the road about 4 years ago I have no Idea how old it is or what type it is but I do like the weeping form. Its been root pruned once (3 years ago) just to relive pot-binding. And I prune it as needed to keep the general form. I'd...

    Grow Lights Output

And dont forget; plants dont use most of the light we see. Lux is a measurement of light intensity that we can see. So you might as well put that meter away. If you want 400w worth of light you have to use 400w worth of bulb because again, the equivilancy rating on the cfl is about percived...

    Allow Me to Introduce Myself

I live on whidbey island off the shore of Washington state. And poink; I have 4 trees I haven't killed ;) killed a nursery juniper with my grow-light and killed a wild specimen I literally climbed a mountain to get... I think that may have been an altitude issue. Thanks for the warm welcome...
