From bonsai pot back to organic soil?

I think you need to set up the sprinkler system. They have quite a few now that include WiFi controllers that you can turn on and off remotely, and if you combine it with a streaming web cam of your yard, you can turn your water on and off from Iraq, if you so desired. Changing a soil mix so...

    Activated carbon good for soil?

This ^^^. Many people use carbon elements in their water filtration to remove organic chemicals and chlorine. However you have to occasionally remove the old filter cartridge and replace it with a new one. I have always wondered about the use of activated carbon in a soil mix. I don't...

Winter Bonsai 2024, Kannapolis, NC (outside of Charlotte) December 7 & 8, 2024

Though I agree that was probably the trigger to moving to a juried selection process, there were 68 trees submitted. So 29 people were turned down (at least this year) - not just one or two.

That would be my first suggestion - so that all the vendors could be kept in the same area. That second room (where they hold the demonstrations and the auction) is much larger than the primary vendor room, anyway.

Winter Bonsai 2024, Kannapolis, NC (outside of Charlotte) December 7 & 8, 2024

Just got an update note from Steve Zeisel. There were 68 submissions for 39 exhibit tables, so competition for exhibit tables was fierce. Some good trees will not make the show, but I am pretty certain the overall caliber of the show will improve. All vending tables have been reserved, and...

    Bonsai soil !!!

My only comment has to do with pine bark fines. I can buy a bag of pine bark mulch at my local Lowes and sift out the fines (with about 75% yield) for $3.48. That's about 1.5 cubic feet of fines, or just over 11 gallons of media for $3.48. Yes, you have to pay for pumice or akadama or lava...

    Specs of brown/yellow/gray

It looks pretty good to me. Did they sell it to you as a San Jose juniper?

I wouldn't recommend you do anything right now. Mid April in Vegas is too late to be messing around with conifer roots - you want your tree completely settled after a repot, and before the heat of the summer. Can you share a photo of the entire tree? I'm seeing a lot of mixed needle and scale...

Learning the trees on my land (anything useful?)

Sweetgum is a little challenging because (unlike a maple which it looks similiar to) it has alternating leaves instead of opposing leaves. It is difficult to develop ramification because it is difficult to prune back to two buds to get two new lateral shoots. It tends to get leggy and develop...

    Cedar elm air layering 2024

I am obviously just teasing - I look forward to seeing your results! That's a big layer and I hope you are successful!

    The 2024 Yamadori/Collecting Thread

Spent yesterday potting up some Japanese hollies out of my landscape. I think they were planted circa 1974 (when our old house was built).

    Looking for a shade item.

Threaten to put up the ugliest solar panel array if they don't allow you to put up a pergola with shade cloth :) HOA's in California can't block solar panel installs.

Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) from seedling

Yeah they are crowded. I end up with about 50ish per flat. But after two years it is still pretty easy to separate them and pot them up.

Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) from seedling

I do something similar, but it depends on the tree species. For weaker / smaller trees like Japanese maple or princess persimmon, I sow a ton of seeds in an Anderson flat and let them grow for two years. In the spring of the 3rd year they will be 4" - 6" tall and I move them into 1 gallon...
