    Hokkaido Elm

Thought some might be interested to see this seiju elm from Australia. Not mine but an artist that goes by the name Grim Elder. About 10 years in training from field grown stock. I’ll try to update with how mine are going. Still going ok but nothing as good as this.

Good info for those looking for the perfect watering wand

One benefit of the Dramm over Masakuni would be that the Dramn has a lifetime warranty. It has become known that Masakuni is the complete opposite. So if you buy the Dramm which is an amazing product if it ever leaks or malfunctions they will send you out a new one.

Is Trident Leaf Curl normal after they start to l hardening off?

Hi Smoke, I too have had some issues with fungus on trident as you suggested. I have used a fungicide called Bravo (chlorothalonil) that worked well in the past but it is very toxic and does not seem to be working as well any more. Some one asked what fungucide you use but you seem to have...

    Rules of proportion

Hi B There is no 6:1 rule but if you look at all the styles of bonsai and in fact very mature trees you will find that 6:1 is the average of trunk to height thickness. Of course Judy and Dav4 are correct in what they say that it is only about what looks good. But often being able to explain why...

    Akadama

We have a great supplier of double red line akadama here in Australia. First off I have to say I think you guys are getting ripped off by your suppliers. If we can get it for around $16 a bag after shipping it around the country by the pallet load then you guys must be paying more than 150% mark...

New board playing tricks on me.... Double post, sorry.

    An Australian native; Banksia

I must say when I first saw one of these pots I was very taken. But after seeing some very mediocre trees in them my impression changed. Funny how we work some times. By the response we see here on the pot it is obvious it is just me. Thanks for the added info but not sure I am running off to...

    Another one of my hornbeams

Some interesting comments:D Personally I think the notion that everything must grow up on deciduous trees is the pendulum swinging too far back in the other direction. If I was too put my interpretation into words I would say that a deciduous tree fills spaces and generally grows in an upward...

Great to see this one an international board Grant. I love the tree but not so keen on the Pot. Maybe it is just that I saw these pots as a Fad in Australia and I got the feeling they where a little overused or cheap. They are a nice pot but I just can't seem to get that notion out of my...

    Another one of my hornbeams

Had this one about two years. I couldn't go past the great root spread. First branch on the left is a graft that I am not sure will work. I am starting to think I don't need it now anyway ? The first branch on the right was nothing more than a one bud twig when I got it so I am happy with...

    Hornbeam what would you do?

Thanks for the input Bnut. It is not the first time I have had that said about this tree. I must say when I first started Bonsai I had lower expectations of where I want this tree to go and probably would not choose this material again. Yet I do like this tree even with it's faults and...

    Hornbeam what would you do?

Hi Brian In previous years I worked by a process of fighting apical dominance in the same manner as some do a pine. I would prune the lower branches first. Wait until they started to bud back out and then prune the top. The idea being that the lower branches would have a head start over the...

    Hornbeam what would you do?

Hi Tmason and Brian. I already had another hornbeam with major deadwood showing and I guess I was keen on a more traditional looking deciduous for this one. I always keep in mind when styling that one day I or someone else will change the front so it could be swapped back to front pretty...
