I'm looking to get a good handle on making my own soil mix, as I can't justify the $30+ for small bags from the local nurseries anymore. I used to have a reasonably priced source for soil in VT, but I've recently moved to just outside NYC, so any local advice as to where to source the materials...

Thanks for the responses. This is what I had concluded as well. I scoured the list of park land rules/regulations and it does say removal is prohibited, but with little mention of how to apply for a permit. Archaeological and research purposes are often permitted, but nothing on individuals...

Anyone have any experience working with the NY State Parks Dept. on getting a permit to collect material from state land? Do they even issue permits? Thanks!
