What kind of tree is this? Anything I can do with it?

I thought it was a money tree too...until I noticed the thicker leaves, which leads me to think schefflera.

Willow Leaf Ficus in training with possible fungal problem

Personally, if you think it's a fungal infection, I'd hit it w/a good sulphur or copper fungicide. Sulphur's gentler but weaker. Fungus gnats suck, but are probably not going to hurt your tree.

    Changing a mallsai

As you've already chosen what to do, this won't apply to you. But to anyone in similar circumstances--i.e. rescued a mallsai--why not consider growing 5 or 6 long shoots, feeding heavily, and then thread grafting each precisely where you need branches. Ficus respond well to this treatment, and...

    My first Austrian pine

I have four large austrians, and provided it isn't a repot year, I do a total candle removal of the weakest candles about 2 weeks before they would normally be ready. A week later, I remove the "medium" strength candles, and a week after that, I remove all the strongest candles. I have good...

Lighting colors, wavelengths, and photosynthesis questions for LED lighting

Kevster, Why do you want to run LED's? I have several friends in the hydroponic industry and they all say that LED's just aren't sufficient as a single source of artificial light. Yes, the lumen/watt ration is staggering, but even today, HID's out perform them. LED's may work for small...

    One of my Fukes

Thanks for the input. You're absolutely right about changing the angle. In fact that's my bad, when I repotted it, I didn't pay close enough attention to the angle.

    One of my Fukes

Wow, my eyes have been opened by your photoshop edit of my picture. Nice job, that really does work. And you're right about the backwards thing. How does that happen?

Why I use cut paste to seal some wounds

The elmer's glue smelling stuff is kiyonal or some similar brand. These are glue/latex sealants, and are very wet. I use them for big root cuts, but I try to avoid them on visible areas becasue they tend to discolor the wood. For the latter I like the putty-type cut paste.

    One of my Fukes

Thanks for all the input, and to everyone who took the time. The pads are indeed in need of tidying up, but it was just repotted, and I like to give the roots a chance to get some carbs before trimming. As for the air layer, I'm just not that brave. Is the suggestion due to the bare lower...

    One of my Fukes

Below is a pic of a 40 year old fuke. I know the lower trunk is a bit knobby, but what do you think? How ought I improve it?

    Fukien Tea Yellowing Leaves

Sounds like you have a good setup. As for my fertilizer, I use a 20-20-20 w/micronutrients at 1/4 strength. I like "plant prod" because it's got all the major micronutrients. The instructions on the package say a teaspoon/gallon, so I use 6 teaspoons/25 gallons.

    What species is it?

    A challenge of sorts...

I've got no problem posting pics, but the only camera I have is the one on this computer, so the photos are kinda crappy. Should we be posting them in the gallery, or just as thumbnails in this thread?

    What are these trees?

Sorry, my bad, I didn't see the second tree. It's some sort of tropical, my best guess is brush cherry (eugenia). But misfit could be right about the privet.

    Fukien Tea Yellowing Leaves

I have successfully kept the following species indoors from mid-september to mid-may for the past ten years: Ficus retusa, macrocarpa, nerifolia Fukien Tea Sageretia Serrissa Texas Ebony Grewia Calliandra The two most important and limiting factors when growing tropicals indoors are light...
