    Sick elm

My elm has brown leaves which I assume are fungal or pest related? Have sprayed. Should I remove all effected areas which will leave my elm almost leafless. I'm in the Pacific northwest in Canada, above Seattle. FWIW no other bonsai have issues and are thriving. The elm is in full/near...

    Washington Hawthorne--tough to get flowering?

Hey - similar challenges here. But am now following Graham Potter's seasonal pruning advice to see if it helps. Have you seen his instructions? https://www.kaizenbonsai.com/bonsai-tree-care-information/getting-bonsai-hawthorns-to-flower

Tips to get crabapple to flower

Hi - I've had a crabapple for a number of yrs (about 4 I think). It's happy and healthy, but has not flowered. Are there any particular pruning, or feeding tricks that I'm not doing right? I basically just feed once leaves are out, and repot every 2 to 3 yrs as needed, and try not to feed from...

Akadama vs. Pumice vs. Lava Rock

How much charcoal and conditioner do you use? I've been using turface + pumice or lava rock (whichever of the two I can find). I will try to amend with some charcoal & conditioner.

Some photos of various of my deciduous trees today.

Gorgeous - especially the hawthorn. What's your pruning / maintenance schedule for the hawthorn if you don't mind me asking? I've not had much luck with my hawthorn flowering. Do you do a hard prune in late winter, and then leave it alone the rest of the year?

Help ! What Fungus / Parasite Is This & How Do I Fix It?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Tips of shoots only..... is that more suggestive of a fungus, that an anti fungicide eradicate? Looks like buds started to swell, then called it a day, went black. There are other areas where new shoots are starting to push out and other plants are now leafing out, so...

Help ! What Fungus / Parasite Is This & How Do I Fix It?

Hi, I went on holiday for 3 weeks, and just got back. Many of my bonsai are sick, with either a fungus or parasite / pest. What is this, and how do I fix it? It's effected a maple, juniper, boxwood, and pyracantha. For context: I live in the pacific northwest (mild / temperate / wet climate)...

how late in the yr to fert black and red pine?

Hi, I'm in the pacific northwest of N. America (north of Seattle). With JP Black & Red Pine, how late would you recommend fertilizing? Assuming early Oct would represent the last fertilization, for spring growth. Would you agree, or should I fertilize later into the autumn? Thanks.

    hawthorn - not flowering....

Hi, I've been working on a Hawthorn for about 2 or 3 yrs (dug up from a friend's property). It's still very much a work in progress, however I'm curious as to why it hasn't flowered since I've had it. Aside from a bit of removing of branches that aren't working, I've left it alone...

    Browning Leaves

Hi, I've got an elm, with leaves that are browning. Not sure why - ideas? Too much sun, pest problem etc? I'm in the pacific northwest, if useful. Normal daytime temperatures are around 20C / 70F. My soil is very porous (mostly turface) which generally works well for me with other plants...

    trident - hasn't budded yet

Hi, I'm in the Pacific Northwest. I've got a couple of small trident seedlings (started from seed 3 yrs ago). They haven't budded yet, which is odd. If I scrape off some bark, it's still green underneath, so I know it's alive. Any reason why it'd be so late budding? Thx.

How often to dig up and correct roots on young pines?

Hi, I've got about a dozen or so small 3 or 4 yr old pines growing in the ground, over tiles, to get the nabari off to a good start (a few JP Red, JP black pines, a white pine, and a mugho). All started from seed, which grew in a pot for 2 yrs, and are now in the ground. Question: how often...
