Hey everyone, I'm still around and haven't given up on Bonsai. I just haven't really had a chance to do much lately as my Dad past away at the beginning of the month after a 9 month battle with Brain Cancer. Now that things are starting to get back to normal I thought I'd update my progress...

Thans Armetisius, I'm pretty I remember seeing that stuff everywhere at one point, but haven't seen any in ages. No worries though, I'll grab some online.

I'll slip pot it into a plastic pot on the weekend until I can get a list/timeline set up of when i'm gonna do what for it.

Juniper Squamata is what it was tagged with at the nursery. What exactly is Raffia? I've seen it used plenty of times in photos/youtube, but not sure if it's just material, a type of paper or bark or whatever. Is it specific to bonsai or would it likely be available at a nursery/garden center...

Do I take all the leaves off or just enough to get a good idea of branch structure and work on the ramification? Thanks again, and sorry everyone for so many questions.

I'll start adding some more bends into the cascade on the weekend and try and get the middle upright branch looking more attractive. I'll jin the opposite branch at a later time, and if it doesn't look any good, it can always be removed I had a lot of trouble wiring at that stage, I think...

You two do bring up a good point, and I wasn't insulted at all Adair M. You really did hit the nail on the head though, thats exactly what I did. I ordered the tree online(so I couldn't inspect it before buying) arrived in the mail the next day and gave it a trim only to find that it was a tall...

In that case, I might just chuck a Gardenia in a growpot for a few years before trying to work on one. I just really love the contrast of the white flowers on the dark green leaves:p Thanks GrimLore, i'll be sure to keep an eye out for them, I've probably seen them posting on the ausbonsai...

Thanks for the welcome edprocoat and Jason Haha, that gave me a good laugh. We've got a gardenia growing in our front yard and had remembered seeing on some other forums some people talking about them as bonsai, I did a google image search on them and I find them really nice, with the...

The branches left on the tree at the moment were the main branches, up through the middle section it was all very thin, just needles coming off the branch for the most part Seems like Air Layering seems to be the popular opinion for this tree. Will have to a long hard think on it Any...

Thanks Paradox, I'll get onto that this weekend. Do you think this tree is suitable to a semi-cascade/cascade with part of it being informal upright? or do i need to chop some branches off?

Hopefully they do drop, If not, I'll have a good read up on defoliating. I'll leave it in its bag until spring and then i'll do some root work and put it in a bonsai pot. When would be a good time to chop back that longer branch? Thanks again.

Thanks everyone. I like to think I'm not easily discouraged and tend to take everything on board, at the end of the day, you lot know a lot more then me and it'd be foolish not to listen. That said, If I do have my mind set on something, or something sounds too far out of my skill level I'll...
