Just Starting Bonsai - Best plant

I have grown a eugenia indoors... it grew very well until I decided I wanted to do a hard cutting on it and it never came back for me, so that is also an idea. as far as info goes, if you're looking into ficus, I suggest searching for Jerry Meislik on google, his website is, I think...

    Ficus from a box store

this is definitely a ginseng ficus, and as mentioned they are very popular right now because of the root feature. They give the appearance of a bonsai quickly, although as you know it's just a tubular trunk with a few spindly branches on top. I have seen very nice ginseng but they are much...

    Bonsai Vault forum

I haven't been in a while, but it's the only place I'd ever had a 1 on 1 with Meislik (although I was quite out of my element). I don't remember registration being a problem?!?

pomegranate.. could this one work for Bonsai?

You will always appreciate waiting that extra year. You could end up with two or three nice trees out of this one, instead of just the one.

Just Starting Bonsai - Best plant

the first bonsai... mine was a schefflera, I took some cuttings from it, the original plant died but one of the cuttings is still alive. My second was a very poorly designed "malsai" Tigerbark Ficus I got from Home Depot, it's also still alive :) Technically, anything can be a bonsai... now...

    Acer Palmatum Kiyohime

I would be very hesitant to airlayer off an acer p hybrid cultivar, the reason they are grafted is for a stronger root stock. If you don't like where the graft is you can always attempt to cut and regraft on new stock. I would agree to not repot at this time.

So what should I do now?

if a mistake can be turned into a feature, I say go for it... a jin coming off the top may look great if it's done right, although it'll change the balance of the tree... perhaps some people better suited to photoshop than I could put some virt's together for you

    My Collected Spruce and Fir

first off, the trees are amazing, like most everyone else I like the first the best, like said, it's almost a dig and pot bonsai, but I'm sure you'll find something to do with it. secondly, awesome pic of the mother bear nursing, kudos on that shot. Our bear around here in Colorado are...

    Sharp's Pygmy Airlayer Question

thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to do it no matter what, the top needs to come off, so if I end up with 2 trees, great, if not, no harm.

    Cherry

I love cherry bonsai, you know what kind? I have a couple in my yard I want to airlayer off branches next year, so excited to see what happens to this guy. One fair warning, since the main leading trunk has been cut, it will be a long time for this guy to put some real girth on the trunk...

    Sharp's Pygmy Airlayer Question

OK, so not the right season, and I ain't doin' it now, but I've been wondering... I have a Sharp's Pygmy that I would like to airlayer off the top, how does this particular brand of Acer P do rooting on it's own? I know certain hybrids are extremely delicate when it comes to rooting, so I'm...

    Ficus Microcarpa Tigerbark

working on that exact thing now actually, that's really the only way I can see turning this tree from the Walmart Special it is now into something worth owning. The main reason I went for it was because of the "T" shape which I plan on grafting roots to to give a nice banyan look
