    Hydroton instead of Akadama

I thought both akadama and kanuma are dried volcanic clays?

    Insecticide

I had read that "Organocide" is a good, organic insecticide that can even be used indoors. (I wouldn't recommend it--great fish-scent!) As to your other questions, I can't speak to it. On the package, it says to use every 2 weeks. It's also available at Lowe's for $14/qt. Daniel

    Suthin Shimp

I can see that, Rob. Thank you for that explanation. Is this (circulation and general health of the tree) where this type of "interpretation" came into being? Daniel

    Suthin Shimp

I think you're simplifying the act of making a live, scale tree. What I'm finding is that this is my interpretation. Quite literal, but my interpretation nonetheless. A lot of people also think that building model cars accurately in scale is easy--you'd be quickly surprised. It is as much...

    Iron feeding regimen?

How clever! Something as simple as placing nails on the soil surface. Fascinating. Thanks for the info, Glider. It's much appreciated. Daniel

    Tired of Crappy Threads

Isn't the Karaoke Bar (off topic discussion) for this? If it were in the General Discussion forum, that's one thing, but if it's where it belongs... Daniel

    Iron feeding regimen?

Collect it? Heck, it's the *only* rock around here...no joke. Well, maybe a little sand stone, but not much. That's why Kentucky has huge caves around here... I just tested the water's pH--you won't believe it, but it's 8.0. Yikes! No wonder! Now, the question is how to acidify the...

    Suthin Shimp

I have seen it and would give my left gonad to have some of those trees! I used to live in NM and Wyoming and would love to go back and have an opportunity to collect some trees. Legally, of course, but that's another discussion! :D

    Iron feeding regimen?

Absolutely it makes sense, Bonhe. In Louisville, we have lots o' limestone around here, which causes the water to be very, very hard. This, I would imagine (if my chemistry serves me right) would make the water pH very high (relatively). I'll check it and see. If that's the case, then I'll...

    Suthin Shimp

Thanks, Harry. Yes, I can see that it's an interpretation, and with that you can get all sorts of views. Having built scale models down to the most minute of detail (another Japanese and Asian obsession), I am more into taking what I see in nature and replicating it in scale. No...

    Suthin Shimp

The tree is great! I do like shimpakus. They're growing on me day by day (no pun intended). However, I have a question and to preface it, this is not a slap at anyone involved. The question is that the tree before the styling by Suthin seemed very natural--something you would see in...

    Humic acid fertilizers

Ok. I use something similar to Boon's fertilizer cakes (fish emulsion, bone meal, cottonseed meal). Does this have humic acid, or is this something I should be adding in? I also use liquid seaweed every other week. Obviously I have no clue about this stuff, and I want to learn as much as...

    Iron feeding regimen?

But, in the case where foliage color is lacking (yellowing), wouldn't this indicate iron feeding? That's what I was going on. What I was thinking of doing was adding some iron to the fertilizer cakes I make. I guess most think it useless? Has anyone used Actino-iron? It is supposed...

    Iron feeding regimen?

Thanks again, Al. I was trying to back-engineer this stuff, but I couldn't find a pattern (I'm a mathematician by training...) to it. Nothing really cahnged. Maybe I watered a little too much, but I don't think that to be the case. I used the ol' pick 'er up and feel her method for watering...

    Iron feeding regimen?

Anyone know how often bonsai should be fed iron? Is this on an as-needed basis, or something that needs to be done by itself? Do you put it in your organic fert cakes? I've just found that this can be important to plants and have been reading up on it. I purchased some Actino-Iron and used...
