Red Pine candles
The only reason you would want to do this on such a young tree is to get some low branching i would think. I did that on a seedling and have lots of low branching now i am letting it grow.

What in your soil?
I use Turface, Pumice (Dry Stall), and chicken grit (growers grade) in different amounts depending on the tree.

Suitable grit for soil...
I buy the brand called Gran-i-grit.It comes in a 50 lb bag and it's pretty cheap. I get it at Southern States as well as pumice called Dry-Stall.

Mine is supposed to be a Korean Hornbeam too and its leaves turn yellow too.
