Do you come to a discussion forum for the truth or an attaboy?

"This is a hobby, after all".[/QUOTE It's more than a hobbie to some. It can be a way to pay the bills for a lucky few, or a way of life, or all of that. I seems all I can think about is these crazy trees ( I have had other interest's I would consider hobbies, like herpetology and fishing )...

    Oh look, another soil thread...

For anyone reading this, please take it with a grain of salt when somebody tells you that "the only" good top coating is "blah blah blah". I'm sure there are dozens if not hundreds or more substances or mixtures out there that will work. it depends on a million different factors including what...

    Oh look, another soil thread...

Why use an organic at all in your mix? With my ficus, I go with the holy trinity, scoria (crushed lava rock ), some sort of pumice, and akadama. Sift the dust out and put it thru screens so you get a uniform size (don't mix big and small soil componenets together, or they sit to close to each...

    Lantana Question

Smoke. I posted this on another thread where somebody was having critter problems. There is a rare breed of terrier that's common in england. It is an A1 hunting terrier. mine used to run and jump and snatch squirrels as they tried to run up the trunk of a big tree or wall. shakes them like a...

Thanks guys. I wrote that post at work yesterday, and when I got home, guess what? lil green buds all over both (I forgot to mention that 1 of the branches I cut off the main stump at the property where it was growing, looked like it would make an awesome shohin cause it has taper, movement and...

    Lantana Question

Hi I recently dug a huge, beautiful lanatna from a neighbors yard. It was growing over their sewer line since they planted in the 1940's. it has a base of at least 12''. It looks old as heck and has beautiful movement and taper. I guess the nitrogen it got out of the sewer line helped grow...

    Emergency summer repot?...Oil Dri mess

I would not use turface. The porosity of it is too small, so The roots are not able to draw water out as they need it especialy when the temps go up (I got this from Ryan Niel). pumice, Hyuga (Japanese pumice you can order anywhere and have sent to you) or perlite will be much better. mix with...

Finally Cut Paste in smart colors

These are the guys that sell the wire caddy that was talked about on this forum a few months ago. I bought one of the wire caddy's and it's awesome! sure, you can make one yourself out of PVC, but it would end up costing you the same, plus hours of cutting and fitting it together. Im gonna...

Potentially moving to Las Vegas from Los Angeles

You might want to google and see if there is a bonsai club in Vegas. Maybe you can hook with somebody to show you how to keep the trees you will take with you from frying. I doubt anyone there has Ume for more than 15 minutes. Even in the winter, the dry desert winds will desicate any fine...

What bonsai books would you 'all recommend

The Naka books have some good basic info, but some of it, like creating an apex by reapeating first branch, second branch, etc, is a little out dated. I agree, the Harry Harrington books at bonsaiforme.com are awesome. Also, you can go to stonelantern.com and they have many, many books...
