How did you go with this? Any updates? I've got quite a few enkianthus in the ground but i'm having trouble with their tendency to sucker/put out epicormic growth

After giving much thought to how to finish it i finally settled on a combination of walnut, brown japan and mahogany stains mixed through shellac and layered up...i would have liked to have kept more of the pine's grain, but after having had a few bad experiences with blotching and unpredictable...

I'd second Shibui's opinion on this one! From my own experience, not only does the wire bite in incredibly quickly but the branches on maples in the ground seem incredibly slow to actually set in place and have a major tendency to spring back up once the wire's removed - even if its bitten in...

The bottom of the stone is relatively smooth, but annoyingly far from flat - it slopes quite aggressively from front to back and curves up on each end....which is a huge part of why this daiza ended up being so thick, as i wanted to make sure the whole thing was nicely seated all the way...

Another quick update today to show the newly carved 'beading' around the base of the daiza...its still quite rough and in need of refinement and some more carving to round it over a little but i think it makes for an improvement thus far

Thanks! I tried to carve it down to meet the widest point all around the stone So far i've done the whole thing with chisels and gouges, though the pine lets me know the second they get blunt by tearing out haha
