    Slash Pines

Following this one! I've got a much bigger slash pine in training as a garden tree but i've not found a way to manage the needle length yet

Enkianthus perulatus AKA Doudan Tsutsuji. Root pune and trunk chop advice.

How did you go with this? Any updates? I've got quite a few enkianthus in the ground but i'm having trouble with their tendency to sucker/put out epicormic growth

    Daiza carving

That came out great! I love how rich the colour is in that sapele

    New Daiza WIP

After giving much thought to how to finish it i finally settled on a combination of walnut, brown japan and mahogany stains mixed through shellac and layered up...i would have liked to have kept more of the pine's grain, but after having had a few bad experiences with blotching and unpredictable...

    New Daiza WIP

I'm not entirely sure yet...i'm thinking of layering up some walnut and teak washes with shellac to get something with some variation a little like this https://samedge.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/attachment-1.jpeg

Bjorn's You Tube VS Web Page Single Flush Pine Advice

I'm definitely not an expert with single flush pines, but i seem to recall hearing and reading something similar a while ago on the mirai site about trying to induce back budding on eastern white pines/pinus strobus and limber pines/pinus flexilis. Going off memory, i think they were saying that...

    Wiring niwaki maple trees

I'd second Shibui's opinion on this one! From my own experience, not only does the wire bite in incredibly quickly but the branches on maples in the ground seem incredibly slow to actually set in place and have a major tendency to spring back up once the wire's removed - even if its bitten in...

    New Daiza WIP

Howdy all, hopefully you're not all sick of this thread by now, but i just wanted to share the latest update; After spending an embarrassingly large amount of time sanding out tooling and layout marks and a few more hours shaping and sanding the bead around the base, the visible areas of the...

    New Daiza WIP

Its looking pretty awesome so far! Really good job on fitting it...once that bits over the rest is a bit of a cake walk

    New Daiza WIP

Thanks! The bottom of the stone is relatively smooth, but annoyingly far from flat - it slopes quite aggressively from front to back and curves up on each end....which is a huge part of why this daiza ended up being so thick, as i wanted to make sure the whole thing was nicely seated all the way...

    New Daiza WIP

Another quick update today to show the newly carved 'beading' around the base of the daiza...its still quite rough and in need of refinement and some more carving to round it over a little but i think it makes for an improvement thus far

    New Daiza WIP

alas i never got around to doing a drawing of it as its sort of evolved along the way

    New Daiza WIP

just a small update today and an appeal for some aesthetic input... I've finally roughed out the feet, trying to position each one under a visually weighty area of the rock, but i'm a little uncertain of whether the feet should be higher/the gaps in between them raised up and/or whether i...

    New Daiza WIP

Thanks! I tried to carve it down to meet the widest point all around the stone So far i've done the whole thing with chisels and gouges, though the pine lets me know the second they get blunt by tearing out haha

    New Daiza WIP

Thanks guys! I've made a couple before but that was way back so i'd kind of forgotten how tricky they can be...the exact placement/sizing for the feet is still troubling me a little but i've started toying with some ideas for them. I spent a good chunk of today refining the lip around the...
