Wisteria Pot / Tree Scoring Methodology Dale...Sorry I haven't written on this forum to everyones' satisfaction. I generally don't get on forums, and lately I have been very turned off by the petty bickering between "Senior Members". In any case, my scores were based on the following: 1...

    Nursery Stock Masterpieces

Good Starter Material..... I gotta side with Walter...the best and quickest path to better bonsai is with the best material you can find. Had a conversation with Colin Lewis & Marco I. up at Bonsai West in November 2K7; one observation Marco made which will stick with me for a very long...

Pot Choices..... Rick...Your comments are spot on, re choosing pots. Many times, when you can't find "the right one" the creative juices need to flow, and the ideas need to be transcribed into requests to your potter of choice.....and ain't it a wonderful thing when that "perfect" finished...

re Thanks..... Our pleasure....the contest was fun, the entries were all interesting to consider, and it was clear a lot of thought and work was put into building the entries. I think the entrants had fun "fantasizing" on what their tree would / could be. You know from working your own...

    Yamadori Discussion

Yamadori and the Common Man..... I have come to believe bonsai is a very personal art. I have done a bit of collecting, of both "boring" and "exciting" wild trees. The boring ones I used to help me understand techniques better, like ramification. These trees are not by any stretch of the...

Looks like some mighty nice work to me! Did you start building pots just out of curiosity, or to help provide homes for trees, which you couldn't easily find in local shops, or what? Flex

Modern Pots.... I don't understand contemporary, or modern...I was born in South Jersey! My eye is guided by color and shape combos. Verts help, and Tom will attest to the fact I do lots of verts, to see what combo brings out the "best" in a tree. I believe each tree has a buried...

European vs North American Rick...I have been (once) to the Ginkgo Festival, so have touched, tasted and smelled the top European bonsai (not the artists!). Been around a lot of East Coast bonsai folk (Chase Rosade, Howard McNeal, Jim Doyle & others) and several Left Coast artists (Kathy...

    Priceless

Self Defense Trees! I have a number of "bars" growing on my Eastern Pa. digs. The biggest is by the front edge of a stream on the side of my property, and I keep it there to keep the local neighborhood kids from tramping thru the flower beds...where my trees overwinter! Glad to see there...

New Book North American Bonsai Dale..Isn't this the book Marty Schmalenberg put together? Is it worth the 50 bucks? Flex / 4MAAT

Instant Taper I took a weekend series with Kathy Shaner about 10 years ago. One technique she discussed for quick taper is almost exactly what Nut is explaining. Do a horizontal trunk cut maybe 10-15cm up from the lowest branches. Then make a deep "V" cut vertically down through the trunk...
