I will wire it soon, once sap is flowing a little more.

I decided to go in the same direction you guys suggested. Took the snapshot of a video because I didn't take any stills. I'll wire that leader in a few weeks when sap starts flowing and it doesn't feel so brittle.

I made the chop last year when digging the tree to work the roots, and I intended to let it thicken a little more before I performed my first chop for taper. I haven't taken a low chop off of the table. @clem @Corrado the image you posted was my other consideration for a chop. Like I said...

Also, here's the other tree mentioned in the first couple pages.

This tree grew well last year and I'm trying to decide what I like as a front and where I would like to make a chop. I would like some input from you guys as to what you would do. I thought about just a low chop, but there is slight movement in the tree that could allow me to make a chop further up.

    Funky palmatum

Didn't get a chance to. It died shortly after leafing out. I didn't do an autopsy but it was probably a root issue. I don't think it was a pathogen because no other trees were affected.

For it to be an even pancake, it takes several repots with proper work. For root fusion around the base, you can have that begin in just a couple years. The second tree that I posted above will have a fair amount of that pancake nebari when I work it this spring, but it also has several roots...

    Trident saplings grown through washers

Here are two of my best that were grown through metal or wood tile. Both are three-five years old.

Pictures from a few weeks ago, tree was transplanted to another area in the yard and root grafts were removed. Grafts shown either by my finger or in red.

The more the merrier.. I have started a few just like this, but I have one tree in the middle of each that I plan to use as a single trunk after the all fuse. Maybe a couple triple trunks but we'll see. They're all pencil sized or smaller right now.

Here are two of the three graft unions on the root side. The look to be fusing nicely as well.

I haven't dug down but I will tomorrow and take a look. You make a very good point. @Conor I don't think I will ever beat Brian in anything bonsai related. Too much of an education and talent gap between us right now.

I just went back and re read your post and I believe that I initially misread it and then committed it to memory incorrectly. Oops!

Root grafts have grown well and could probably be separated now. However, I'll wait until next year to be safe. This is a close up of one of the outgoing graft unions. The picture is a couple weeks old and when I checked today it looked to be fully fused. Here are a couple shots of the tree...

    Square pots for deciduous trees

@Adair M While it could stand some faster growth for the apex and for the wound in the back, the roots are actually in pretty good shape. These are stills from a video so they aren't perfect but the root ball is already flat. The issue that I see with getting this one on a board, at least...
