    Dawn Redwood Growth - Strategy??

I use escape roots in grow bags in the ground for at least two years. Then, into pot, flat, or wooden pot with root work and style up the tree. Repeat if I want a larger tree.

    Protecting Utah juniper in Louisiana

I have two Utah junipers in the Memphis area. Our climate is humid; we do not have an issue with excessive rot on deadwood. I do clean the hardwood and apply lime sulfur twice a year. You can use a PC petrifier for additional protection. I haven't had to use it on my Utah, but I have used it...

When To Remove Conifers/Evergreens from Unheated Garage as Winter Closes (?)

The answer is you cannot be sure, but check the last date frost in your area. Having said that, my area is April 1st, and I emptied my cold frame in preparation for repotting, cutting, and grafting trees. I'm going to rely on a strong back and the bonsai shuffle.

    Grow bed/box Medium

Sawdust is good but be careful. It needs to cook, so leave it out for a minimum of six months before using it.

    Grow bed/box Medium

I built my own raised bed. The filling ingredients are lightweight aggregate and fine pine bark, which can be purchased in bulk. You can use bark in a pinch, but courser bark than pine fine. I also make my own compost, which ends up in my vegetable garden, and the rest ends up where I grow my...

Young JBP advice to start a good shohin

It depends on your goal with the tree. The second is which one you want to be the leader. If you want a Shohin tree, remove the branches circle in yellow and buds in green. You would also need to reduce the needles on top. If you want a larger tree, rewire the trunk and bend more of the top...

Too long branches - way for back budding?

Looking at the tree, I don't think you need the back budding. This is a good time to clean up the foliage. You'll be surprised how good the foliage can look after the cleanup. It's a young tree, and a little wiring tightened the look. If you want to induce back bud, fertilize in the spring...

    Cheap Source Of Pine Bark?

If you want bulk, get pine fines from your local nursery or mulch suppliers. Most will do a pickup truck of 1/2 cubic yards. Some municipalities will provide free mulch if you pick it up. You'll have to sift these. The paid pine fines are about the size of a soil conditioner branded...

    Bonsaify Juniper eCourse Suggestions?

    1. If you were going to make this course yourself - where do you think you would have the most trouble explaining concepts to the students? A design concept. Students without training in intensive or other classes will have a hard time grasping design concepts. I would skip the propagation...

    Importing trees

I believe only Japanese White Pine and Azalea can be quarantine in Japan and do not need to be quarantine in US. It's a immediate release after you receive shipment. Plants from China, Taiwan have looser restriction. Most can be release after received. All plants from any country outside US...
