    Boxwood Winter Care

Do you have more info about a cloth system? I’m not familiar.

    Boxwood Winter Care

I have a retaining wall that I put everything else against. It protects the trees from the cold westward winds. I haven’t packed the pots in mulch, but think I’ll start this year to provide additional protection to the roots. Here is a photo of them (Kingsville on the right), in case anyone...

    Boxwood Winter Care

I have a couple boxwoods here in Michigan (5b). One is a small Kingsville. It spent last summer in a southern facing window indoors. It did fine. The other is a larger unknown type. This is my first winter with this guy. In this environment, what is the best practice for overwintering? My...

    Pale foliage on “Nana”

So I have this little mallsai sitting around, and I’ve noticed that to foliage near the tips is much more pale than deeper inside the plant. I don’t think I’ve seen this before - thoughts? The foliage is all soft and tender - no signs of becoming brittle.

    Boxwood Pest ID + Treatment?

I have a boxwood that has some nasty pests on it. Could anyone help me identify these from the photos and recommend a treatment? Thanks!

    Juniper Branch

See attached photos. This is a branch on a Shimpaku. I have been removing the inside grown as it pops up, but it has left the branch bare inside. Is this the wrong strategy? The problem is, there isn’t any other branch that I can bring over top of it to fill th3 void. It’s one of the only...

    Repotting a “Struggling” Juniper?

Will do. Should I fertilize when it starts to push new growth?

    Repotting a “Struggling” Juniper?

One of my junipers came out of winter looking quite beat up. One of the branches has foliage that is almost certainly dead (it will become a Jin), and the rest doesn’t look healthy either. I’ve had this guy a few years in the same container and soil it came in. I think the soil is starting to...

Maple Branching Structure - Where to Cut?

Great stuff. So if I were to summarize: Early Spring: cut back and start over if branch has a node close to the trunk, cut back to that if no node near trunk, stub the branch back to within an inch of the trunk if branch junction within 1-2" of trunk, cut back just past junction and leave...

Maple Branching Structure - Where to Cut?

A couple years ago, I obtained a big Amur Maple stump and haven't given it much attention. I've only hedge pruned it, and now the branching sucks, so it's time to fix it and properly work the branches. I've attached a photo of what some of the branches look like. The main branch will be long...

    Close call ...

High winds nearly knocked this one off the bench, but the tree had different plans. I shall now call this Juniper “Cliffhanger” ...

Progressive Maple Challenge - Amur maple #1 WP

Walter, do you defoliate Amur Maples to speed up ramification? I see that practice used on Trident Maples, and didn't know if the same practice applies here.

    Amur Maple Resource(s)?

I have an Amur Maple stump that has been left to grow basically wild for the past 2 seasons. It's been hedge trimmed (yikes!) to keep a basic shape, but when the leaves come off, the branches are a mess. I've read a lot about Trident Maples, and how they are defoliated to encourage...
