I dug down and found big circling roots, so it seems I will get some layering practice this spring, no? If I bare root in the spring, will that affect the viability of a successful air layer?

Worked on this finally today. Hoping I folowed Vance's instructions correctly. It's now slip potted into a pond basket with granite/NAPA Oil Dry mix. Thanks again for the help, Vance!

It is indeed about 3' tall. Any input on their viability as bonsai? I have had no luck searching for info. Is there a better known relative that I can pattern the care and shaping of this tree off of?

The best advice I can give from a fellow beginner bonsai enthusiast is to understand that in order to achieve bonsai looks and characteristics you have to start from the roots up... If you have this tree dug and re-potted, leave it be for the rest of this season and allow it to try to survive...
