    Shinpaku Koromogae Progress

It's partially my personal preference, 9/10 times I enjoy itogawa more than tosho as far as the maintenance, aesthetic and work goes but the other half is the longterm investment. After I graft and make this tree with itogawa the value will increase by about 3-4x. This tree will be sold once it...

    Shinpaku Koromogae Progress

Brian, thank you for the kind words. Here is a deeper explanation I gave on my instagram page that dives into the issues and my feelings on grafting this particular tree.

And before it gets brought up yes this tree has many great angles and sides but the intended future front was chosen with my Senpai Naoki Maeoka because most others sides tend to look a bit like a tanuki and to some degree a bit pigeon breasted. Thanks.

    Shinpaku Koromogae Progress

One of the many things I was looking forward to about studying in Japan before I came was finding a nice Tosho or Sonare juniper to graft and change to Itogawa foliage during the duration of my apprenticeship. Well, a few days ago I found that special tree and am quite excited! Creating this...

    Sea Hibiscus

This is a very common species used for bonsai throughout Taiwan and other tropical Asian countries. In english its commonly referred to as "sea hibiscus" or "mallow" in the landscape trade. It's also grown here in the Southern islands of Japan and is known as Hamabo (ハマボウ). Although the leaves...

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Here is another kinzu, or.. er the roots of one that I have been growing from seed. 2017 2018 The trunks on this species thicken at such an incredibly slow rate that a common technique is to develop the roots as a future trunk, eventually cutting back to the roots and regrowing from 1 or 2...

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Very glad to see that it is doing well! I'm not sure I mentioned this during the sale but Kinzu or any kumquats for that matter tend to be slightly zinc and iron deficient naturally. A little chelated iron and zinc every 2-3 weeks will do the trick. Southern CA tends to have water which is very...

    Kinzu (Golden Bean kumquat)

Yes, originally from Japan. I do not have a thread for it but maybe i will create one this evening with older photos. I am currently in Japan studying at Kouka-en ( the kinzu is in Florida) so there wont be any new photographs for quite some time.

    Rocky Mountain Juniper Koromogae

Put some grafts on my RMJ earlier this week and finally got around to writing up a post on the subject - Here's a few photos and a link to the post. https://moonlightbonsai.wordpress.com/2018/04/02/koromogae-philosophy-rocky-mountain-juniper/

The "Van Meer" Technique to Scar Closing

I'm not sure of any videos, I'll make one next time I have a tree in my hands that is fitting for this technique. You really don't need the chisel... Ebihara typically did a wedge cut versus the more squared off cut i did. If only doing the wedge cut which is sufficient on its own the only tools...
