    The Incomparable Vance Wood

Another Vance classic I think Vance has outdone himself with this one: "Americans have been slow to embrace the tree though it is as common as dog hair on a hill billy sofa." You gotta love this guy

    Air layer?

Lots of variables, size, species, health, weather, moisture. Look for white tip roots under the plastic. Assuming you wrapped it in plastic. Keep it moist as June heats up. My JBP took over 2 growing seasons before I cut it off. Good luck, some will not make it.

What to look for, in a nursery plant ?

HD and the other BB's usually buy locally from a regional grower that can support the stores in that region. Check the label on the pot for the grower's location. Check the trees as suggested in the prior posts(I use my same 25 yr old Leatherman multi tool to poke around in the roots and...

    Best time to chop cotoneaster?

Cotoneaster can be worked just before bud break like most specemines. The secret is timing it and the after care available. Once worked (thawed, repotted, pruned) you can't let it refreeze without usually suffering some serious side effects. So, worked specimines need late winter protection once...

Which book would you buy first?

As books go for reference in this hobby I would also recommend a work by Peter D Adams that I have found to be a great source of assistance, inspiration and just plain old help in my endeavours to capture a glimpse of nature in miniture. "Bonsai Design - Deciduous and Coniferous Trees" While...

    Dwarf Pomegranate Winter Care

Mike: My Nana Emperor poms stayed out in the cold frame all winter. Temps last year were below freezing for over 2 months and cold frame was snow covered from Dec to Mar. Lowest temps were below 0F for a few days. I might add that they were very slow in coming back this year, so much so that I...
