    Advice for Trident

Today, I did an approach graft on "Jay" the trident. I did a thread graft a few weeks ago, but my cat ate it, so I had to change directions. Also I did a trunk chop where Brian marked in his first reply last year.

    Just a few maples

Ive tried for the last three years to layer a sangu kaku. I had given up. I thought they were one of the varieties that didn't take well. What method steps and materials did you use? This one hasn't done done so well. The mother died shortly afterwards. The air layer has survived for several...

    Just a few maples

Always willing to make a deal. Its probably 10 years old. Roots got crossed and then grew together forming an ugly mess on the front. It needs someone with a Midas touch.

    Just a few maples

Very good questions. I know of the technique you speak of.........chopping around the tree a year before you plan to harvest it. But I did not know how extensive the roots would grow downwards and whether this technique would be easier than pots. I guess I should have tried both methods because...

    Just a few maples

You don't have to use pots. I did because I thought it would be easier to cut a few roots that grow out of the pot instead of having to dig the whole thing up........whenever the time came to put into a bonsai pot. Also, my trees(about 50 total) are growing in two 4ft x 8ft raised garden beds...

    Advice for Trident

Sure, he makes a ton of sense. But I also think because the branch above the trunk chop is feeding the right side of the tree, it has a chance to live. Time will tell.

    Advice for Trident

Yes, the callous is increasing. I think it will be ok, but that doesn't mean Im right. Each time I have scored the callous(2xs this year), it recovers and continues to grow.

    Advice for Trident

Although I will take Smokes advice and thread graft a few branches onto the right side of the tree, I do not believe the right side will die without them. Check the photo out below. I marked the compartmentalization in the middle of the trunk red. I also marked the thick branch exiting the trunk...

    Advice for Trident

Thank you guys for all your help. You know, I have been thinking about this tree a lot over the past few days. I mean, a lot. Like OCD, a lot. Like, day and night, a lot. I hope you understand. Anyway, after several days, it finally hit me. I grew the stinking tree all wrong from the start...

    Just a few maples

All of my maples are still in early development. All are grown in nursery pots, on top of a tile, and then placed in a raised garden bed so the roots can grow into the ground. Unfortunately, I have moved them each year(no repotting just moved) and cutting the roots has hindered their growth. (I...
