    Azalea browning leaf tips

Well, fortunately this isn't a problem anymore. Its health really picked up over the past 4 months or so. Maybe it would be a good idea to just start a new thread once I get it into a different pot to avoid confusion with the title. But to answer your question, I actually was keeping them...

    Azalea browning leaf tips

I am looking for a crescent pot to plant this in maybe just before spring 2015, but I would like to start looking now. Could anyone here recommend some places where I might find one? I know a few sites that sell pots, but crescent pots are a little more of a "specialty". I realized that...

    Before & After

I've been enjoying this thread so much, I figured I should contribute in some way. I guess this is about the closest thing I have to an "after", although, like BVF said of one of his, it's really a "during". Since the last photo was taken, I've refined the three deadwood "spires" a little and...

    Shohin Nire Elm 2013NE001

Nice little tree. I bought one just like it from NEBG early this spring and a squirrel killed it soon after. Luckily I managed to get one of several cuttings to root before the original tree was lost. The bark is great. Squirrel thought so too.

    Acer is withering again.

I live just down the hill a ways from Paul. I have a couple of small Japanese maples (not in akadama), and I noticed that even when I placed them in a pretty shady, cool area last year, the leaves still burned. This year, they've been under 30% shade cloth (along with almost everything else)...

    Hinoki Cypress Update

I've gotta say, Rob... Posts like these are one of the main reasons I lurk this site so much. Even if I've seen this tree or any one of your others 100 times, I'll always open the thread to see it once more. Thanks for all the updates you've given lately. Michael

    Cleaning up a procumbens

Luckily it isn't a crucial aspect of the design. Whether it stays or goes wouldn't effect the overall impact that of the tree. Meant to say, also, that losing the right branch may have been sort of a blessing in disguise. The shape of the lower jin is less obscured.

    Cleaning up a procumbens

Ah, that's a bummer... I agree though, the placement of it in the second pic is more pleasing than the first. It would be great if glue could be applied inconspicuously, although it would probably develop a different color as it weathers. Never tried it though, so who knows. Is only the...

    Cleaning up a procumbens

Rob, I noticed that the jin about in the center of the foliage maybe 2/3 up the trunk seems to change slightly between the first and the second picture. It looks as if it points downward a bit more. Did you work that jin as well? Or maybe the photo was taken at a slightly different angle...

    Azalea browning leaf tips

Time for a little update. Since the last post, after repotting, the plant regained its health and put out a good amount of new growth. No more browning tips whatsoever. However, during that period of time I started to become a little dissatisfied with my initial styling. After taking it to a...

    Bonsai aesthetic

I imagine, also, that if you were to analyze the proportions among the various parts of your favorite trees (in person or in a photo), that you would likely find this ratio more abundantly and with greater complexity than in trees you do not find so appealing, even though the person designing...

    Bonsai aesthetic

It's funny you posted this thread as I'm currently reading a book on phi. I've been interested in this value for some time, but until fairly recently I had not really considered how it might play into the design of bonsai. As has already been mentioned, the golden ratio naturally presents...

    Crape Myrtle project

The base on that monster is impressive, Marco. Being such a vigorous tree, it probably won't have trouble recovering from collection too. Looks large enough that the flowers may even work with the final design. You should start a thread for sure when you decide to collect it.

    Crape Myrtle project

Jkl, Those two trees are outstanding, especially the second. Both are dwarf varieties, correct? I'm not sure if you saw my most recent post with pictures a few posts back; I have indeed attempted to incorporate the two most visible chop scars on the taller trunk into the design by carving...

    Crape Myrtle project

I suppose there is also the possibility of eventually grafting on a dwarf variety; there is one example in particular that I have seen online that seems to have turned out successful.
