I'd cut it right at the top of the burl and grow the resulting whips as a clump style. That would take two to three years to be convincing. The trunks are too straight no taper.

    Eastern Red Cedars

"I love local species. I encourage their use. I have many myself. However, I try to understand WHY they do what they do and how they do it. Understanding them on a deeper level can help greatly when trying to adapt them to bonsai culture. THey're all hardly the same. ERC is far too quirky and...

Japanese beetle invasion - threat to bonsai ?

They show up every season in my garden to pick on a few particular trees I have. This year it was a birch. Every year I do the same thing, I find a powder bug killer that's rated to kill beetles and I sprinkle it all over the leaves. Ends the problem every year before it ever gets started.

    Collecting Amur Maples

Continued. Many thanks to John Callaway (in pic) for volunteering to help me repot these. I seriously don't think I could have physically done it alone.

    Collecting Amur Maples

These Amur Maples (Acer Ginnala) were approximately twenty feet in height prior to collection. Took the better part of two days and two chain saw chains to dig out. I needed a tractor to lift them onto my trailer for the trip home. They were initially potted in 50 gallon containers and left...

    A Discarded Yew

Happened to be driving along with the family when I noticed this Taxus pulled out of the ground laying in a front yard. Looked promising, pulled over, asked the owner and they were happy to be rid of it. Brought it back, cleared out the garden soil, potted in pure turface and its already...
