Bjorn Bjorholm Speaks Out On Hedge Pruning

I think Mr Ljubek is confusing your hedging method with actually cutting a hedge.

Cork bark elm one year on

Each year I say...one more year... The plan was always to have a wide flattish top and short low branches (as per below) - that's why it's a bit ''top heavy''

    Are These Pine Roots Healthy?

Yes. And it would also be good if I learned to look at the date of posting before commenting.

Ok, point taken. But when you talk of a superior product.... ....you are talking about a result (product) brought about by method. Your ''superior product'' is also subjective. So are the ''best known practices'' In fact the two are not really separable as can be seen when we follow many of the...

    Are These Pine Roots Healthy?

Most of those roots are dead or will die soon. At least the bottom ones. You should repot immediately into a small pot after removing all the dead roots. Repot into a clay pot (a small one!) and use either course sand or that with some sphagnum moss. Water once and let it dry out before watering...

And the point is........the style is no longer a personal matter. It is has become a product of indoctrination. We are not talking technique.

Ok, so then you would have to call many Japanese practitioners who look at Western bonsai arrogant too because they often say there is ''something wrong'' with it. It has nothing to do with arrogance, it is about expressing one's view and you cannot do that without comparing one idea with the...

Bjorn Bjorholm Speaks Out On Hedge Pruning

All that may be true Adair but if the motivation is difficulty, then what does that say to you? To just come up with something like ''everyone is free to do whatever they like'' is not only obvious but contributes nothing to the evolution of the concept of bonsai. Japan has hit a dead end - in...

Bjorn Bjorholm Speaks Out On Hedge Pruning

Agreed. I was having a similar ''discussion'' the other day on another forum and submitted this (below) to illustrate a parallel with modern bonsai in Japan - and elsewhere. (it was not understood)........ ...........Let me quote directly from ''Wabi Sabi'' Leonard Koren, concerning the...

That's got to be one of the ugliest ''masterpiece'' shimpakus I have ever seen. Why not just mould one out of plastic and be done with it!?

I hedged my zelkova twice last summer. It is good for quickly getting light into the tree and most if not all of the resulting twigs will be cut off in winter anyway.
