Perhaps I should have mentioned that this is a NEW tree straight from a bonsai nursery so my horticulture shortcomings might have been forgiven.

Got a new small JBP and of course it is top heavy. More energy in top part.
Can you just CLIP shorter those needles?
Just to balance the composition.
And even if they get brown tips.
Or will it wreck the clipped needles?

One of the nicest, biggest ones I ever had was a pyracantha.
Got tired of jillions of aphids every year and having to nip the ends off the thorns that I traded it to the bonsai nursery for a pine.
That died almost immediately.

I went and did it. Now it will not be MY fault if it dies.
It looked happy to be out of that kakadama.
Now in the lava mix w/ pumice and a ....tad.... of kaka.
But mainly FREE TO DRAIN now.
I can see it out the window waving its branches in glee. :)
