    Strainers:

Wow I had no idea I was in the presents of such an elite crowd. I'm suprised none of you have broken your arms patting yourselves on the back. Oh and by the way about patenting a product.... Which since it came up..... There are about 6 different patents you need to apply for to ensure your...

    Forsythia bonsai?

JimJ, I took for granted that you may not be familiar with growing bonsai stock in the ground for a number of years before beginning training in a pot. For the above mentioned I am growing my forsythias in the ground right now to develope a good trunk and nebari (surface roots). They are...

    Forsythia bonsai?

Forsythia tend to be stoleniforous in nature not always but most tend to sucker from their roots. I'm currently attempting it myself just by cutting back unwanted suckers from the base as they appear and trying to develope a central leader. Other shrubs that may be similar would be barberries...

    Good mushrooms?

I was just reading in an international arborist trade magezine that adding mycorriza to all trees is not of benefit to all trees. As a matter of fact the article was about snake oil treatments in the Arborists trade. As it turns out when mycorriza was found to be benefitial to pines there...

    Strainers:

Well Yup it's for aeration. Roots need air and strainers provide it. It also makes a nice compact root mass of very fibrous roots. Adding to another principal that healthy vigorous roots in the best case senerio means healthy vigorous foliage. Rapid healthy growth. In the Master's Series...

    Whacky Weather

Yesterday here we were at 50 degrees at 3 pm and -1 by this morning. The temps dropped 35 degrees in an hour. I have seen buds that have begun to break dormancy here but not completely opening. If we get a weeks worth of warmer weather with another cold snap there might be caused for concern for...

How much root reduction is safe for A.ginalla?

Thanks Grog. I'm a sucker for "Little Mule" type info. Not to mention the location this species name is derived from. It helps to put things into perspective. For instance why some of these Amurs are cold hardy to zone 2. Again thanks for the nugget.

    Name that tree

I just saw this thread and wondered, do you know how to identify Cornus species? I ask because thats what I thought it was when I saw the bark. I know when just about any given cornus is in leaf if you pull the leaf apart perpendicular to the midrib (pull slowly) you should see white stringy...

How much root reduction is safe for A.ginalla?

Sorry to say no pictures today. Apparently one day at 46 degrees doesn't make up for the past month at near or below 0 F. All the mulch is frozen around the base of the tree an is immovable. I promise I'll be posting pics when it thaws. It'll be fun to post the process of digging it up pruning...

How much root reduction is safe for A.ginalla?

Well I can take some pictures. I have a fairly nice hp camera. I simply have no idea how to up load pictures to this site. Is it pretty basic? Is there an ideal setting I should have it on as far as MP size? I'll gladly post some pictures. As far as the root mass is concerned it filled the 5...

How much root reduction is safe for A.ginalla?

Hi, I've got an Acer ginalla (Amur maple) I got it at a club function 2 years ago as our club president was culling the herd. It has execellent root spread a 3" thick stubby trunk that branches out into three main branches within the first 4 inches (the branches need a bit of work anyway...
