    Kokufu-ten 2022

Thanks for these. Does anyone know the species of the one attached. I can't read the text at the bottom.

A Spring tour of my benches. Trees in various stages of development

Thanks. I don't know what the differences are but your growing season may be shorter than we have in the UK. It may also be down to species. Elm, Field Maple and Spindle are all quite fast growing. I'm using Molar clay for most trees with some composted bark mixed in. I feed with a combination...

A Spring tour of my benches. Trees in various stages of development

Filmed today. Basic info on each tree is shown in the video. This doesn't include some recently collected trees. A similar video from 3 weeks ago before the leaves were out is here.

Three English elms - Structure building

An update on these as they've recently all gone into something resembling bonsai pots. The main structure is complete. They just need to ramify and fill out. You can see a video of these trees with most of my others here. The pot was made by myself. See here for details. The thread-grafted...

I didn't like Ryan Neil too much. But then...

Funny, that video came across in a different way to me. I've always had difficulty with Ryan's personality and in this video he came across as more pretentious than usual. I'd be surprised if the beginner in the video ever becomes an expert, because Ryan has made him nervous by questioning...

    English Elm shoots with Bracts

I can confirm that after cutting back to a bract, the shoot didn't die back and new buds have emerged at the bract.

    BONSAI HERESY

I've just finished reading it myself. I liked the book a lot. It is definitely on more the Japanese tradition side but does also go into the science behind it to back it up and also goes into where we can do things differently. If there was a negative comment I'd just say that it was rather...

Bjorn Bjorholm Speaks Out On Hedge Pruning

I've just finished reading Michael Hagedorn's new book - Bonsai Heresy. I couldn't help thinking how it goes against a lot of things that I've read from Mr Pall such as the use of hard water, chemical fertilisers, avoiding akadama. When I started out with bonsai I liked Walter's advice because...

    English Elm shoots with Bracts

Thanks. That's good to know. I wasn't aware that they were bracts either until I asked the Reddit tree experts.

    English Elm shoots with Bracts

After the first trim this Spring the new shoots grew with what I believe are bracts. I understand that these are modified leaves associated with flowering. The problem is that this means the shoots are quite long before the first leaf. See photo below. My question is, can I prune back to a bract...

2 year progression of a Field Maple

I'm happy with the height of the tree. I think that a tall elegant style with gradual taper suits Maples well. I like to have a range of styles in my collection and I already have several short squat trees. Also, Field Maple has quite coarse growth and is difficult as a smaller tree.

    Has anyone dyed soil successfully?

I mainly use a molar clay cat litter product here in the UK (Sanicat pink). However, it's a light pink colour when dry and I'd like something that looks more like akadama for top dressing, without having to pay for akadama. Has anyone had any luck dyeing this kind of soil or similar such as...

2 year progression of a Field Maple

Thanks. I replaced the camera each time with markings on the ground. The positioning wasn't perfect but the offset was corrected during cropping. You need to be careful to keep the angle and distance the same though as that's more difficult to align.

Can please shove money at someone to escape ads?

As someone who runs an online business I know that setting up a paid membership option can be a lot more difficult than it sounds. The site then becomes a business and with that comes the need to pay taxes amongst other things. Only registered charities are allowed to accept donations.

2 year progression of a Field Maple

I created a time-lapse of this tree over Autumn / Spring. Autumn starts on 19th October 2019 and ends 30th November 2019. Spring starts on 31st March 2020 and ends 9th May 2020. With this Spring's growth the crown is starting to develop a better more domed appearance. Note that I did do some...
