    Happy New Years flowering quince

Definitely not an ume...it is a nice Japanese Quince as far as I can tell. :)

    how can this be.

Close to mine too...I just use Turface, DE, and bark (sometimes Miracle Grow potting soil) and it works for me. Of course many told me my trees will die in my mix...knock on wood but they are very healthy. ;)

    JBP Development Thread?

Looks like BVF and Adair have different (or opposite) style. I believe Peter Tea teaches similar to BVF also. While I haven't done JBP, the concept should be the same for all plants and I lean towards Adair's style of not disturbing the foliage (and growth in general) on the sacrifice branch...

Miracle Grow Potting Mix Okay For Now?

I use something very similar. Make sure you get the #8822 they seem to have a similar product but not made w/ same material.

Miracle Grow Potting Mix Okay For Now?

I use about 1/3 Turface, 1/3 Napa Floor Dry, 1/3 Miracle Grow potting soil on most of my mix. I also add a sprinkle of charcoal to this. Working fine so far. I sift all of them using a kitchen sifter (almost like window scree sized) though I have a regular 3 stage bonsai sifter. I do plan on...

Tired of spending money on "pre-bonsai"

I agree...it is so easy to blame the plant's shortcomings, when in truth, it is us who is lacking. Good material is no question better to work on but it is only part of the equation. Real question is, are you ready for it? As long as the expectation is realistic then go for it. BTW, there...

    yucca extract?

I'll share when I am done with some tests I have planned (but kept putting aside). It is in line with what Leo posted but I think the benefit is more w/ yucca/aloe extract.

    yucca extract?

I use something similar...aloe vera extract. You can get it from Walmart or HEB (supermarket). http://www.herbspro.com/fruit-of-the-earth-aloe-vera-juice-99728.html?gclid=Cj0KEQiAiamlBRCgj83PiYm6--gBEiQArnojD3H3I0dnaDZHzLecSVmQV3JUJKY0gvzaERDlJjiyk-0aArat8P8HAQ Not sure how much it is...

    Bonsai tool set

BTW, read the part about "typical grinds" here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grind Most people who sharpen accidentally change the tool's grind w/o knowing it...ergo changing how the tool cuts. Going back to the scissors...the scissor have simple chisel grind on each blade. If you sharpen the...

    Bonsai tool set

Correct impression. ;) I am with Skinnygoomba. Work with a simple knife then move on. My preference is a single bevel chisel. Once you properly understood how and why the bevel works, you can apply that to multitude of tools...scissors and concave cutters alike. They are just like chisels...
