Thanks for the replies. I collected the tree in fall of 2019 & it's been in 100% Pumice. It grew so well it burst the first box(cedar fence boards) and I re-potted in the end of summer keeping the outside untouched and clearing out the remaining soil from collection around the core of the root...
This is a great way to get material. Some will die due to mistreatment before you get your hands on them, or perhaps from the work you have to do fo get them manageable. eg cutting large roots.
I will typically bare root most trees, and clear out some clutter on the top that l know will not be...
Olive seem to bud from the trunk frequently. I usually rub them off, unless you want a branch to grow out.
If that is the case you would have to grow one out, so that it is thicker than the ones above it.
I personally would leave it for now. That basic carving may weather out by the time the tree grows out more. Using power tools can be tricky, and you wouldn't want to damage that main branch/leader.
I would suggest practicing carving on downed branches you find on your property or neighborhood...
I think one thing that drives this obsession is the diversity of styles and techniques, not to mention all the species to try.
Well, I don't have a maple clump project yet...
I fear that it may be too late for this one. From my experience, once they get dry a d loose the vibrant green,they seldom come back. You can try misting the foliage.
