Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

It'll be a week or two before I'm back down there, but I'll look at the tag again next time I visit them.

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

Well, that seems to have worked. That first pic above is how it came in the pot. Here's a few more. This is the solid chunk of clay it came in. I've done natural clay plaster work before, and I can tell you it's very difficult to make a clay plaster this hard on purpose. Wherever this...

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

I am trying to post pics now, but not being the most tech savvy, please be patient if this takes a few tries. Also please forgive my poor photography skills. Testing

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

It will not be styled at all this year. Maybe not for two years. I did not fully repot it. I just carefully worked some of the feeder roots free so it could get water, as was suggested to me here. The bulk of it is still in that massive block of clay. The roots I did work free were near...

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

Update for everyone that helped me. I repotted the Spruce yesterday. Big lesson learned from this tree was to be sure of what soil the thing is in before buying it. This poor guy was in a block of rock hard clay and I was not prepared for that. Even if I'd planted this into the ground at my...

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

Thank you everyone. I have been very impressed with the level of help I get on this site. It's occurred to me that this thing is native to Colorado, which does not get a lot of rain. It's used to drought. The heavy clay soil may not be as bad for it as I had feared in the short run. I'll still...

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

Thanks. I just tried to water it, and it's pretty obvious water is just running through the sides and not absorbing into the soil the roots are in. If it were in the ground I'm sure the water would eventually seep in, but in the pot, it just runs down the sides. I think I'm going to repot it...

Blue Spruce from Box Store, Prune or Repot first

I stumbled across a Colorado Blue Spruce I really like the trunk of at a local big box store. My Dad also recently commented on how much he loved the coloring of the Blue Spruce. So I picked it up for him for Fathers Day/Birthday (same weekend). I had planned on doing some rough shaping for...

PS: Harry's demonstration was amazing. Shame on anyone in the area that missed it.

    PBA show and sale

I was lucky enough to have work bring me to the area this week. Spent a good part of the last two days there and will be going back for the Forest demonstration tomorrow morning. Luckily I don't have to worry about spending all my money as it's not practical for me to haul stuff first to Texas...

Potmac Bonsai Association in DC May 3, 4, 5

Already spent two days there and will be back in the morning for Chris's forest class. I'm really looking forward to it! I'm so lucky that work had to send me out here this week.

Newbie trying to safe a pygmy juniper, advice/double check appreciated

Thank you. That is definitely being added to the weyerhouser collection for places to take my Dad.

Newbie trying to safe a pygmy juniper, advice/double check appreciated

Thanks for the heads up on the roots being slow to take in water. "In the shade on a day with a few rare sunbreaks" would have been more acurate for me to say, as actual direct sunlight is extremely rare around here for another 2 or 3 months. You've still helped me avoid that mistake with the...

OK, the insert image command seems to have not worked. Not sure how to post the picture here. Edit to try to add photo again.

Newbie trying to safe a pygmy juniper, advice/double check appreciated

Tried inserting a photo with the "insert" command, but I'm not sure if it worked. I think it is dead. About half the foilage crumbled off in my hand. I tried to scratch the trunk, and most of the bark peeled off/fell off. It's brown underneath. Talked to my Dad when he got home and it turns out...
