@Clyde It occurs to me that mesquite might not make bad bonsai. Just a thought.

Could you possibly chop at an angle lower down and pick a leader branch to continue the upward line? It would take some time but it might make a better taper in the long run.

I'm definitely going to do that. It's just been so hot here lately, the soil seems to dry out crazy fast. I think I need to check more thoroughly.

After several unsuccessful attempts to take a better picture, and some internet research, I think what I may have is a slime mold, which has an alarming appearance but is probably not harmful. Even so, I think most of the people here know more than I do, so I am still open to comments and...

As another newbie, I am intrigued to find out that one can ensmallen leaves! Is this done by keeping the tree dry? This is what I am inferring. Also, "ensmallen" is a perfectly cromulent word.
