    Horse Chestnut

It's been in a pot for nine days now. Up until a few days ago the foliage looked very wilted. In the last few days it has shot up about 4 or 5 inches, and the leaves have grown larger. Is this a sign that it's started new root growth, or is it just using it's energy stores? Sand

    Horse Chestnut

Yep, the leaves are really big, but I've read that they can be reduced somewhat. Looking at this tree yesterday I thought it was doing fine, but then we had a cold night (36 F) last night. We'll see. Sand

    Horse Chestnut

This tree may never be suitable for bonsai, but I figured why not. If it survives I'll put it back in the ground for a number of years. Sand

    Horse Chestnut

I collected a Horse Chestnut stump today. This tree was chopped last year and budded back pretty heavily this spring. It has about a 3" diameter trunk. I had to cut two large taproots, but there are several feeders. It's in a 10' wide, 10" deep pot, in a very free-draining mix. I've read...

    Growing from seed

So any tree grown from seed is, in a sense, a new cultivar? And if so, what determines whether or not this new variety becomes a new "named" cultivar? Sand

    Growing from seed

I know that Japanese maples grown from seed will not necessarily stay true to the parent plant. Is this also true for Japanese quinces or all trees in general? Sand

    Soil Sifters

Brent, I went to several hardware stores, a different Fleet Farm, and a Wild Birds store looking for the 1/8" size hardware cloth. I must've talked to twelve individuals who looked like they would know about such things. Not one had ever seen that size. Must be a midwest thing. I'll keep...

    Soil Sifters

What size screen should be used to prepare soil for shohin sized trees? The 1/4" size at Fleet Farm is labeled as 5,6mm, is this too large? I'm sifting chicken grit, lava rock, and bark. Sand

    Transplanting Azaleas

rlist and Bob, Thanks for the replys. The threads I was reading were from about 2-3 years ago. It seems going with straight Kanuma is no longer the norm, which is fine by me.($$$) I looked at the azalea today, but the ground is still frozen solid and it's under two feet of snow. There are about...

    Transplanting Azaleas

This spring I'm planning on transplanting an azalea from my grandmothers garden. This plant is roughly forty years old and has apricot colored flowers. She claims it to be one of the first varieties hardy to our area.(She has a very good memory) In the last couple of years it hasn't flowered as...

    Species to avoid for bonsai

I would add Fukien Tea to this list. Way to fussy in dry climates. Mine dropped 75% of it's foliage in the first two weeks I had it, then took 10 weeks to show any new signs of growth. Sand (Sorry - I guess this would fall under difficult to care for)

About growing JM varieties from seed

I purchased my seeds from three different sources on ebay. All claimed they were freshly picked. One of the sellers sent me detailed instructions on how to prepare them. The instructions for different varieties varied quite a bit. soak, don't soak, a period of warmth before cold, or just cold...

About growing JM varieties from seed

Nut, I don't have any answers right now, but am currently stratifying seeds from fourteen different varieties. I will post the results later in the spring (still winter here). I'm surprised that nobody has answered this thread. Sand
