Chino Bonsai Club Show, Westminster Ca, Aug 13-15 2021

Hey BNut! Thanks for thinking of me. I got to the show because of you. It was a great show! It was much better in person. The pics don't do the trees any justice. It was nice to see people out and about and enjoying bonsai. Except for a few masks, this looks like it could have been before Covid...

    Hokkaido Elm Care

I second what Shibui said. Hokkaido's have very weak root system. The roots are very small and do not ramify much. The roots are very sensitive to die back, from being too wet or too dry or too much or too little fertilizers, unlike the common Chinese elms, and that's why you see sudden dead...

    Reverse taper bad?

Reverse taper is actually a very desirable feature on Brazilian rain tree bonsais. They look really cool with it. Let your tree grow freely for a few years and let it develop that distinctive , muscular, twisted look first, before starting branch training. In your climate you will need to grow...

    Hong Kong Orchid...bonsai?

There is a miniature orchid tree with really tiny leaves and white flowers. I have some. The leaves are about half-inch size. They do well in Southern California. I grew a few from seeds too. I gave away some and friends have made pretty decent bonsai from them. They flower year round almost...

1 bunjin juniper, 4 designs: you decide

It looks ok, not bad, but I am not crazy about the first curve (the lower trunk line). The C-shaped curve in the beginning of a literati design is not good. Could you show some other sides? Have you tried leaning it more? I would not remove any more branches at this point. Let it recover first...

What "debris flow" looks like in Southern California....

That Trabuco Creek may be good for some suiseki hunting in the summer?

    Elm Root Cuttings

Still alive and kicking. Can't remember what the PM was about though. Hope it was useful. Cheers!

Won "Best Finished Koi" in Koi Show

Congrats on the win BNut! I forgot all about that show. Do they have any thing good left?

    Eugenia Yardadori

This is most likely a Brush cherry (Syzygium paniculatum 'Newport'). Very common yard trees in Southern California. Very good material for bonsai. Not commonly seen at shows though. Yours is really nice! Most of the time the stump is just straight up. Good luck with that!

    My red Chinese Elm seedling...

Sure. Remind me later this year. When is the best time to do cuttings? Hi Milehigh. Great to see you here too. I have been too busy. Not doing much bonsai lately. Cheers!

    My red Chinese Elm seedling...

I have one of these red elms. Did I show it to you a while back BNut? Mine is not variegated.

    Are we alone ???

The best reason I could come up with is that they think we are intelligent enough to worship their god.

    25 Years ago today...

Just curious, did Blackfoot indians called themselves blackfoot? Or was that a white man's name for them?
