I planted a few trees in the ground about 2 years ago. I didn’t put a tile under them. Would you recommend digging the trees and root pruning next spring? And place a tile underneath too.....

i had a good look at the base and as you said there was several trunks in each pot. However they are separate plants so I teased them apart and potted them separately . Now have 6 small mugo’s instead 👌

Does anyone have any tips on creating a good nebari on young plants planted in the ground ? I recently purchased two young mugo pines and have put them in the ground to grow. Any steps I can take to maximize nebari development the next few years ?

Yep 100% bark.

I repotted These pines into bark and they have darkened considerably. Some branches appear very brown so they might be toast. Overall I think it was right thing to do.

Good idea yeah. I will do that. The virens leaves are pretty big too. Hopefully with lots of ramification they will reduce a bit .

Have some growth now, most at the base but there are two sprouts further up the trunk. These are contenders for next section trunk and first branch 😁

Couple of buds down at base . Hopefully some will sprout further up 🤞🏻

Just a quick follow up on this. I had taken a JBP from the same batch two years ago and planted in the ground. I had an opportunity to visit it at the weekend and its new growth is a beautiful deep green. So the light green is definitely not just from being new growth. They are repotted now so...

There’s a single shoot coming from the nebari. Nothing else so far . I was expecting something closer to the cut site . It’s still alive anyway so that’s good 👍

I have done an air layer of an acer and there are roots appearing in the ball around the layer. However most of he leaves on this branch are shriveled and look dead but the roots are growing. Has this failed or might it survive ? I haven’t separated it yet . It’s a pretty thin branch I tried it on.

Interestingly there was no mycorrhizae in the box during repot.

Yes they are I’m large containers in sand and compost. I’ll repot them into bark chips now I think. That’s what the Red pine is in and it’s thriving .

I have a couple of JBP and I noticed that the new growth this year is a much paler green than the older needles. Is his normal or should they be darker ? I can’t remember from previous years . I also have a JRP and it’s new growth is as dark as the old needles. This is the last photo . See...
