Definitely not a JM, my best guess is Betula Nigra or river birch. Post again after leaf out and I can tell you for sure. I have a horticulture degree and have lots of JM's.

You should be fine. I'm in South Texas and our lows are usually around that temperature most of the winter. My trees just started to bud out this week. I have mostly maple, elm, beech and crabapple.

I would like some thoughts on next steps. I plan on leaving it in a container for the next few year. I've done some pruning and the leader has really bolted this spring. Should I allow that leader to continue growing or prune it back.
