    Critique My Caretaking

To each, his own I guess. I'll gladly pay for your akadama shipped to my door. But this is the mix that all others are based on. If you need a drier mix, you cut back on aka. On deciduous, you double the aka. I was just trying to help a newbie understand DE, and how it compares to akadama.

    Critique My Caretaking

Welcome! The important things about your planting mix, is that, after watering, it holds as much oxygen as water, and it holds nutrients for the tree. Easier typed than done, I promise. The soil out in your garden may do all of these things, and grow beautiful veggies, but if you try putting it...

Timing for second cutting of JBP seedlings

He definitely has a neat setup. I believe he starts seed in January with bottom heat. The first cutting goes by the color on the stem, but I don't know how the timing goes for the second (and even THIRD!) cuttings. I also don't know about the placement of the cuts after the first

Timing for second cutting of JBP seedlings

It seems like the first cutting is done in March, so my "guess"would be to try the second around June

    Shohin black pine from seed

Scott- in spite of these two great pics, I'm still not sure how this "upside down L" is formed. Is that a straight chisel? On a smaller branch, the cut would form an upside down U because the knife cuts through the bark along two parallel axes (axi?). Is this cut done with the chisel due to the...

    Grafting 101

Scott- is there a reason seedlings, as opposed to rooted cuttings, are used to graft on new roots?

Timing for second cutting of JBP seedlings

The best suggestion I could give would be to make the second cutting 2-3 months before your winter dormant period, to allow the new roots time to harden off

Scott’s 6 year JBP Contest Entry

I went through this process last year, and covered all cuttings. Had 100% success, but on a much smaller scale

My Akadama doesn't seem to dry

Newly repotted trees won't immediately begin using a ton of water. Whenever you start to see fresh new growth on your tree, it means the roots are healing and beginning to send water and nutrients up to make the new growth. Then the water usage will go up

Do you have plans to improve your Bonsai Garden (display area) in 2018?

Mine sort of evolves from year to year, and has never shouted out to me that everything is in a good spot. This year I have started a small area of native plants, and I'm looking for shade cloth to raise over some benches.

    Best source for jbp seeds

JBP, JWP, seedlings. Look up Mark Comstock on fb. Seeds pretreated and ready to grow

So all these - discussions - about soil are ...................

Faster growth would be great, but the definition of "standard nursery methods" would probably start a different form of soil war. Potting soil here is mostly peat with a touch of perlite mixed in, whereas a nursery mix is much lighter. The potting soil just seems to drown plants

Need help with some bugs!! It's really breaking me!

You also have to realize that these pests have a short lifespan, so they grow, breed, and lay eggs in just days. Your spray kills adults, but may have no effect on eggs. Spray every 7-10 days for 3-4 treatments and see if that doesn't do the job. Spray all trees so any eggs laid on host species...

Query regarding Nursery purchases in Multipurpose compost

@Eric Group, and @Gustavo Martins are both right on, IMO. If you can keep them from being saturated and even allow to get MOSTLY dry, and then flush really well, there should be no need at this time to re-pot.

    Zelkova Spots - Help ID

Thanks, Bonhe. I really don't do much watering late in the day..... work nights, but maybe it was rain, or I might have hit them late on a weekend. I'll look up some images of Anthracnose. Vic
