Seeking Advice On My First Two Tropicals - Ginseng Ficus & Too Little Ficus

Just wanted to share a "little" update on the too little.:p Finally showing some back budding after chopping the main trunk that was growing too tall- the small bud will be the new apex then I'll cut back the remaning stub a bit further. Also brought the main branches down so more light is...

Seeking Advice On My First Two Tropicals - Ginseng Ficus & Too Little Ficus

Luckily I purchased my tree after someone had done the initial styling :p. Nursery stock is great for practicing. I have a great little boxood that I picked up in a nursery, branches in every direction, one gallon container, and It turned out quite nice.

Hi AlBooBoo- For me, styling is the most difficult aspect of bonsai to master. I've been at it for roughly 5 years and I still hesitate when styling a tree and selecting branches, especially in early development. Once a tree is mature it's pretty much on autopilot. But if it was easy everyone...

Seeking Advice On My First Two Tropicals - Ginseng Ficus & Too Little Ficus

Hi AlBooBoo- its certainly got some nice and healthy vigorous growth. And you were right about your too little not being so little anymore :p. Hi sorce- I made the cut roughly in the middle of that straight section. Back-budding should force some lateral shoots/fine to fill-in the empty...

Seeking Advice On My First Two Tropicals - Ginseng Ficus & Too Little Ficus

All the leaves obstruct the trunkline and branches, but I think I got some decent pictures that shows the outline. There's a huge scar at the base, but couldn't pass up on the tree for the price. I need to get some finer gauge wire to start working on it. The other problem is the surface roots...

I think it would work. You can also place a plastic pot filled with soil at the base of the trunk. Another method I've read about is putting moss around the area where you want the roots and sorrounding that with a plastic film. Again, I haven't tried these techniques, but I imagine they would...

Someone here mentioned air layering. Have you tried that? It's pretty simple in theory, but I imagine more difficult in practice. Something I might try in the future.

Hi AlBooBoo- Thanks! I guess diging the trunk base below the substrate would force aerial roots, but your guess is as good as mine. I've read that ficus shoot off aerial roots quite effortlessly, so that might work, I just haven't seen it happening on my trees.

MrFancyPlants, thanks for clarifying! I've actually never attempted layering on any tree before. It seems intimidating to me, but I suppose I could give it a try once I get the tree adapted and growing strong. sorce- I like your idea to round the canopy to mimic the base! I'll go with that...

edprocoat- is benjamina another name for too little? I actually like the ginseng. sorce- Yea, that's the entire soil. Lights are on a timer for about 16 hours same as you. I'm thinking it's also what you and KennedyMarx about adapting to a new climate. The ginseng is kind of nice and it was a...
