Luckily I purchased my tree after someone had done the initial styling :p. Nursery stock is great for practicing. I have a great little boxood that I picked up in a nursery, branches in every direction, one gallon container, and It turned out quite nice.

I think it would work. You can also place a plastic pot filled with soil at the base of the trunk. Another method I've read about is putting moss around the area where you want the roots and sorrounding that with a plastic film. Again, I haven't tried these techniques, but I imagine they would...

Someone here mentioned air layering. Have you tried that? It's pretty simple in theory, but I imagine more difficult in practice. Something I might try in the future.

Hi AlBooBoo- Thanks! I guess diging the trunk base below the substrate would force aerial roots, but your guess is as good as mine. I've read that ficus shoot off aerial roots quite effortlessly, so that might work, I just haven't seen it happening on my trees.

MrFancyPlants, thanks for clarifying! I've actually never attempted layering on any tree before. It seems intimidating to me, but I suppose I could give it a try once I get the tree adapted and growing strong. sorce- I like your idea to round the canopy to mimic the base! I'll go with that...
