    Is overpotting a myth?

As far as I can tell, what she writes on her blog seems rational. She also writes about how aborist wood chips used as mulch for trees increases their growth rate, more so than compost or fertilizer. Yet I’m betting a lot of people here might say that would tie up nitrogen, bla bla bla.

    Is overpotting a myth?

Exactly. This is not what I have read on bonsai websites. They basically say to start a seedling in a small pot, maybe 3 or 4 inches. After a year or two, move it into a little bigger, maybe 6 inches, and so on. The article makes it seem like you could plant it straight into a 5 gallon bucket...

    Trunk chop carving

So you guys are basically saying that a diagonal cut is easier to heal over?

    Trunk chop carving

After doing a trunk chop and letting a leader grow for a while, you cut the original trunk chop diagonally so the lower portion of trunk transitions to the new leader. This is what I have mostly seen on the internet. However, there is a video by bonsai Iligan on youtube where he says to make it...

    Do I need shade cloth?

It is currently on top of a CD. I can’t remember exactly how old my zelkova is. It’s been in the ground at least two years. I think it’s over 3 feet tall.

    Do I need shade cloth?

Ok. Sounds like a no on the shade cloth, unless a species is sensitive to it. The Zelkova is in the ground by the way.

    Do I need shade cloth?

I am planning on planting a bunch of trees in the ground in the spring for bonsai. I am wondering if I need shade cloth. There will be a variety of species, both Asian and American. They are all supposed to be good for my zone, but would shade cloth be beneficial for any of them? For example...

Why/when to cut roots in field growing trees?

I’m wondering if it would be good to pull back the soil on the tile and selectively cut roots instead of doing all of it at once.

Why/when to cut roots in field growing trees?

First off, what is the point of cutting the roots around field grown trees? Especially if they are growing on a tile. You are trying to thicken and develop the trunk as fast as possible, so this would slow its grow. Second, assuming there is a good answer to the first question, how often should...

    Juniper trunk thickening rate

I want to field grow some junipers. I love shimpaku, but I'm thinking shimpaku might be very slow to thicken up. Am I right about this? I was wondering if I should grow some other type that will grow faster while I wait on the shimpaku to grow. Does a regular chinese juniper grow faster than...
