I think you're doing alright, it's a pleasant enough piece of stock. I'd pull those branches down, wire in gentle curves the way you have, just fan it out. I think you'll struggle getting decent ramification indoors - I started bonsai with a ficus in a Bronx apartment and the struggle is real.

More than immortal, aggressive. I catch them sometimes sending vining tendrils around my other trees. A few of the smaller bonsai are missing. I think… I think it ate them.

I'm in Pennsylvania myself, it's actually a great place to do bonsai. I've never been to Chase Rosade's studio, but I've heard good things. A little farther afield, in Harrisburg PA, you have Jim Doyle's "Nature's Way Nursery" which has excellent trees for sale and top notch bonsai-ists...

I've got a quite large hornbeam I fell in love with. Hopefully it twigs up fast.

I've got a few maples I'm repotting this year. At least one of them needs substantial branch development, so hell, might as well do this with it.
