So last year it got a little too hot in the late summer in my 'backyard.' There was some leaf scorching going on. So this winter I got an umbrella frame and some shade cloth and got the cloth sewn to fit the umbrella and it's looking good. (thanks mom by the way for doing the sewing...)
I got 8 feet of 6 feet wide 40% shade cloth from here:

shadeclothstore.com
http://www.shadeclothstore.com/products/shadecloth40__knittedshadecloth.html
40% Shade - CL4750 Unfinished 6' width - enter length desired in quantity box (8) $13.20

I got the umbrella frame here:

shadeusa
http://www.patio-umbrellas.com/pati...ellas/9_foot_aluminum_replacement_frames.html
9' replacement frame choices aluminum 8 rib with fiber-flex ribs
Price : US$44.95

It cost about 10$ each for shipping so total cost was $80 plus mom (I'm 41 by the way and mom lives an hour or so away (Santa Rosa) just so you know... this was a rare collaboration project...)

Basically just cut 8 triangles and sewed them together.
Used a 2" drill bit to cut holes in my table

By the way, I'm renting so it's not my fault the landlord put in this reflective limestone tile stuff... I think summers would be easier if the backyard were grass. It's so reflective I sometimes feel like I'm in Las Vegas on a pool patio (that doesn't happen much anymore,) or on a ski slope... hmmm also seems rare.

here's the results:

I second that. I saw a trampoline go flying by earlier this season so an umbrella could indeed.

Ditto. Happened to me this year. I left an umbrella up (my negligence) and the next day wind began to lift the umbrella but then it went sideways and shattered the glass table top. There happened to be a hornbeam of mine on the table and it dropped to the deck below, but stayed upright in it's pot. The tree is doing fine but my table has become either goofy sculpture, or scrap aluminum. Not sure which yet.
I would think, though, that the very open mesh of your shade cloth would be too open to catch any but the most viscious winds. Looks like your patio is protected somewhat by a fence.
