Thanks Bob. I started working on a multitrunk last year, my first tree of that style, and you don't see a lot of good examples to study.

more pictures

If you click on the link in my first post to bonsai tonight, Jonas has posted more pictures of the REBS show. We exhibit close to 200 trees each year. We are luck to have Kathy Shaner as our club sensei, and many of the trees in the show are a result of her workshops. I hope that you enjoy them.

Thanks Bill. I lose track of time, but she has been with us 12-14 years now. Jonas, of bonsai tonight, included one more posting of the REBS show. It is accent plants and a few more trees. The link is my original posting

Is it just me, or it seems like the REBS show displays more creative and original works than the other big shows? I really like those trees.

Well what do you consider a big show?

The convention?
CBS yearly show?
Descanso?

Mostly those are Southern California shows.

The shows in Northern California show trees styled and teachered by Kathy Shaner, Boon Manikitivipart, etc. etc.

The northern people pay particular attention to detail and stand/tree arrangements. They also know how to display on top of a table and how to position an accent and a tree.

The three best shows in all of california is REBS, Boon's display of fine bonsai and BABA,(Bay Area Bonsai Asscoiates) many Booneites there too. East Bay Bonsai does a pretty rockin job also, again many Boon people there.

I guess we would be considered to be a large show. We exhibit close to 200 trees, and since we are a club of beginners to advanced, we encourage all levels to show. However, I feel that we have a large per cent of good trees shown. We have a large vendor area with 18 - 20 vendors, plus a seperate members' sales room. We have Kathy Shaner doing the demo both days with a large raffle and silent auction.
We have people attend from all over Calif and the western states. This year we had 7 of Kathys students come in from Alalabama. A few years ago the CBS club from Southern Calif charted a bus and came up for the show.
Although it is a large show, I am most proud of the quality of trees shown. 2013 will be our 30th annual show, which is always the 4th weekend in August. Plan ahead and join us!

I agree that REBS is a great show and sets a standard for other clubs to aspire to. The large number of trees shown is what makes it especially unique. (even though a lot of the best trees seem to belong to one club member...). Most shows seem to be 50 to 60 trees at the most.
Whenever our club's board discusses ways to improve our shows we compare our show to both REBS and BIB as examples of things we can do better.
Even though members at all levels show their trees a REBS, The trees are usually all meticulously prepared and displayed.
Well done, Bob

I was referring not to the size or importance of the show, but to my perception that the participants in this show are more willing to display trees that look less "traditional". As a comparison, Boon's show follows very closely the Japanese tradition of shaping and displaying trees. The REBS show allows a little more leeway and freedom from any tradition. It's just a personal impression, and I am sure that other people may see it differently.
