Tamarack and alder are trees that are worth your search IMO.

Nope...P ponderosa, I fear it's on its way out...this will be the make or break year, I think. That pic is a year old...that branch died two years ago.

This is a Rocky Mountain Juniper that doesn't mind the Southern climate as much as the pondy

Question about this three group planting: You can probably get the trunks to develop at different rates and create different sizes, if desired. That could mean to temporarily separate the trees, again, only if that's what one want's to do. Do you have any plans to change the calipers or do just live with it? If you are planning to change the trunks, how would you do it? I had a similar situation with a planting, separated it, and someone bought all three trees to plant them back together....hmm.(scratching emoticon)

Cascades are one of my favorite styles and probably one of the most difficult ones to create. Not everything that hangs to one side (pardon me for the lack of a better term) automatically qualifies as cascade style. The way the tree comes out of the ground dictates the success in my view.
Now, there are yamadori cascades that work no matter the base trunk, only because they are so powerful in their entire appearance. They seem to be rather reminescent of a style than the particular style itself. Ahh, ramblings..

Cool..here's another Hachi Gen (JBP corker cultivar) from Brent Walston; 4-5 years ago...some argue it's actually 2 trees...and if the graft doesn't take, it might be...
