Thanks! The juniper is a Japanese Yew from nursery stock

Its chuhin sized, maybe 12" tall?

Here it is in 2008

That's what we do in S Florida with most trees ( unless it's a collected Buttonwood or Juniper). We have to grow it and add age..not so easy and takes time, lots of it.
Even in Florida I'd say I need about 5 years to create a tree with structure, then another 3 years for refinement. And that's only if there are no setbacks. To tell the truth, some of the setbacks are related to fast growing pace. I don't always see what's going on inside the tree and have to regrow. Tough life in Florida..

Well, I guess I have to post another tree now... Here is another, just started training last year, Japanese white pine graft. I found this on at the nursery. It was originally destined to be a mediocre, at best, cascade. Upon a close inspection, I realized that making the side the new front, cutting off the main cascade branch and a few back branches..it could make a pretty nice shohin. Last year, I chopped most of the cascade branch and some of the back branches. This season, the back branches will be further reduced, the whole tree wired and repotted. It is about 7 inches tall with a close to 3 inch base.

Here is the before and after.

Such a sweet setup, and what a wonderful collection you have. You are very talented, and I hope you post more often.

Since my trees are being over wintered at the nursery, I only have my ficus to show. This green island was defoliated a few weeks ago and is leafing out again. The plan is to defoliate again this summer and fine wire, and be shown this fall. It's far from ready but it's a start.

I'll have to deflect most to the kudos to Suthin, I just got it healthy after the demo.
I'm not sure what type of juniper it is, it could be a Pfitzer but that's just a guess. I have to tighten up the foliage and do some work on the deadwood and I'm going to have to deal with that root(Bott left) down the road.

Nice Mugo as usual Vance. I actually have a small (shohin size) Mugo (in the California desert mind you) that is doing well. Here is my Chinese Elm. I don't have a recent picture but it is leafing out now and looks cool. I will take one and post it soon. These are from just prior to defoliating for the Winter Silhouette Show and at the show. Also an artist rendering form the show.

Very interesting and beautiful tree. I would sure like to know the history of this one.

Hi Vance,
The elm tree was imported from China in 1999. Put in it's current pot in 2003. I don't know the actual age of the tree. I acquired the tree from Ray Theime in Fresno California. Ray is a great guy and has a great collection.
Here is a little juniper that started out as a staked tree from a nursery, became a cascade and recently got it's tale cut off.

Very commendable to take a tree that was accepted at a national exhibition last year and then do some dramatic work to it. One of my favorite trees on this site.

A larch that I styled last month and will hopefully be potting down next weekend. As you can see, my trees are all of the quite unfinished variety.

Heres possibly my favorite tree in my collection. A JBP Root over rock. This used to be the back corner but is being developed into the new front. It has yet to be repotted to correct the inclination

I have had that juniper for a many years. It was a rescued yard tree (as many of my trees are). I believe it is San Jose. Here is a little Procumbens that I'm playing around with right now.
