I dug these two trees today the little one was just a bi product of digging the big one. I think they're live oaks but I'm not positive. Also I see now why all you good people were telling me not to try and dig a live oak. If you're thinking of collecting one of these, don't. They have long thick roots with very few feeder roots. I put some rooting hormone on the roots I had to cut and planted them in my garden with some good soil amendments. I sure hope they live. I really hope the big one lives!!!image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

I get a crick in my neck with all these sideways pictures. Are they all cell phone photos? Is there no software that can put them right side up?

I personally don't think that is live oak but I could be mistaken.

image.jpgI've never heard of a water oak and I have two pin oaks on my porch that I bought and know to be pin oaks, and the leaves have larger lobes and are much more pointy than these leaves. Maybe they are under developed because its early in the season. Ill keep an eye on them and post a pic of the leaves when they are fully developed. Here is a pic of one of my pin oak leaves. It looks like it might be a southern red oak maybe??

As far as oaks go, keying them is very difficult. At least this is true of the Californian Oaks because they freely hybridize and there is a great deal of variability of leaf and bark within each species.

Examining the acorns and their caps is usually required as well.
