Atlanta Bonsai Society Spring Show Pictures

Here are some pictures from this year's show at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Being on the spring show committee, I have to say it was quite satisfying to have everything fall into place like it did, even if it was at the last second. Despite the threat for bad weather, we had a great turn out from the public, who were generally very impressed with the show. I can't tell you how many time I had to answer the question, "How Old is that tree???"

So, the pictures. The first one is of a Corkbark JBP, probably the nicest tree in the show...it took Best of Show in the Expert division. The next one is a satsuki azalea that won Best of Show Enthusiast division...owned, apparently, by some yahoo who routinely posts trees right here on B'nut

. The azalea never flowered, so I decided to bring an iris as an accessory plant... I can almost guarrantee you'll never, ever see an azalea shown in the springtime with a flowering accessory planting,... ever again

The third one was a rock planting that won People's Choice Award.

The next picture is of a Korean Hornbeam, followed by a satsuki azalea that won for Best of Show, Novice division. After that, a Ponderosa pine and a satsuki azalea. Finally, my San Jose juniper, shown on a Koa wood slab made right here by our own B'nut member, Sam.

Next up is a Chinese Elm forest, followed by a Shimpaku juniper literati. Then, a shohin display, follwed by a cotoneaster.

Getting close to the end of the pictures I have.... First, another satsuki azalea, followed by a water elm. then, there is a Japanese Maple, followed by a Japanese Flowering Apricot, and a shohin satsuki azalea.

Last but not least, we have a Rocky Mountain Juniper, owned by the same yahoo who owns the really big azalea that won in the enthusiast division...it was brought in just for exhibition...Boon thinks there is a better front

. followed by a shimpaku juniper that had been in the show, but was taken to Boon's workshop on Sunday.

Looks like a great show with some very nice trees! Thanks for sharing Dave.
Excellent pines, some blooming satsukis, and the accent plant with the pondy is very appropriate. I think your satsuki deserves a full reprise here when it's in full bloom!

Thanks, Dario. Some of these pics will likely make into those progression threads, but I'm hoping to find pics taken by someone witha little bit more photographical talent then yours truly

Dave, did you get a pic of the approach graft Boon put on my JBP?

Boon is really good at grafting. Everyone at the workshop benefitted watching him do that, not just me and my tree.

It was great meeting you this past weekend, Adair.

For those of you not paying attention, Adair has a thing for JBP, and he brought a monster of a JBP sumo in development to Boons workshop. It was decided that an approach graft would aid in the design as well as help the chop at the top of the trunk heal. I've got some pictures, but they aren't that good...sorry, don't forget that it's me behind the camera. Also, Boon did this in maybe 5 minutes and there was 10 people standing around him while he worked, so I snapped the pictures when I could.

First, Boon created a groove at the edge of the chop scar where the graft would be placed. He wanted to use a saw, but ended up using a chisel and hammer.

Next, he moved the scion for the graft into place after cutting into the cambium on the bottom AND right side, as well as lightly scraping the left side of the scion, placing a pin through it to hold in place. He then partially hammered heavy duty staples into place over the graft, but left room for a piece of rubber (cushioning) and chopstick to be placed on top. At this point the staples were hammered down (carefully) to secure the graft. Finally, cut paste was applied over the graft to keep moisture out- sorry, no picture. The graft will be left alone for 2 years, but Adiar can place some wire on it this fall. For more specifics, Adair may be able to chime in.

Awesome documentation, thanks for sharing. Adair, do you plan on using that approach graft for the design, or solely utilitarian for healing the chop site?

Ok, I have seen this in a few pics, and now i am curious. What is the point of leaving the center stub on large JBP sacrifice leader chops? Also, how do you seem to leave that center portation intact while sawing the branch off? I have seen it on telperion farms' photos of their pines for sale and now i see it with adair's pine.
