Picked this up a little over a month ago. I will just stare at it this season. Thoughts and comments appreciated.
I think that considering that it's a crab it has great taper. Mine always want to be a cylinder. Nice pick up.
Haha, what is this dude who posted above me' s deal?? This is second tarded post by him in as many minutes. Someone asked for advice on a plum and he also posted as if this was a fruit canning forum or a peanut butter and jelly thread on all recipes lol.
I think it has a lot of character...how tall is it...to trunk chop? To lose all that movement...definitely put some thought into it. Because there is no going back. Great find! I admire their blooms.
I hope you can get yours to bloom. I have one I have grown from seed that has a beautiful trunk but has never bloomed. I keep hoping maybe this year but so far it's disappointed me: Twenty years. I am about to just grow it as a foliage tree because the trunk is so nice. Of course all of this hinges on whether or not it has survived this winter. We have had more than a month with temperatures hovering around with the highs in the teens and the lows below zero. We started with a snow fall around Thanks Giving that is still on the ground.
I have a few ranging from 3 foot to 8 foot that have only ever bloomed(some never) when I let them rest an entire season. If I do ANY work on them at all they simply will not bloom. After a few more years of shaping and work I do fully expect them to though. Just how it works at my place. Could also be you need to have more then one or another cultivar around.

I don't think the presence of another tree has anything to do with it. The sources I have checked out seems to indicate that Crab apple do not bloom well when grown from seed. I am currently playing around with the idea of grafting.
Never seen one in person...just google images and a few books on bonsai. Saddens me to hear they struggle with bloom.
They do not in normal Orchard conditions. In Bonsai it is a far different story with hundreds of cultivars to be considered. Fruiting trees are another aspect to play with and enjoy given you have time.

To be honest...I have tinkered with the idea of eventually having a fruiting bonsai. Their blooms are pretty in photos. But...in no hurry. Much research needs to go into it before I go that route.
